Giant Sigh. . . My Dad Back In Hosp Yesterday

Hi everyone. My father has been struggling so badly with the chemo treatments--and he's back into congestive heart failure. Honestly, I don't know how much more he can take b/c he's so underweight and weak. Thank goodness I'm off from work b/c I really am struggling with sleep... I'm a ball of knots. He's been in and out of his local hospital 4 or 5 times in the past 2 weeks.

Just needed to vent for a moment. Thanks. I'm going to sit out on my patio and hope to see some nice butterflies to take my mind briefly off all this for a few minutes.

Dear Nina,

You and your father have been through so much. My heart is hurting for you right now. I had to slowly watch my father die of lung cancer, and I know how hard it is to see a loved one die slowly. Please remember to take care of yourself, and I'm praying for both you and your father, along with everyone else that's hurting right now. You're doing the right thing - making time for some peaceful, restful moments.

Positive energy and thoughts your way,

Jana

Sending thoughts and Prayers your way Nina.

I'm sorry to hear your dad is so weak right now, as I know this won't allow his body to hold up very well for his chemo treatments.

I'm assuming they can't give him steroids to help him tolerate the chemo better due to his congestive heart failure.

I wish this would just go awy for him, and for all of you in the family that have to watch him suffer like this.

Hugs,

Maxine :0)

Hi Nina,

Its my understanding that the very ill enjoy having their favorite music on, but more than that, actually feel less discomfort.

If I was in your shoes I would feel better thinking there was something I could do. You might load some music on CDs for him. Perhaps a favorite movie or two

and a DVD player.

Hang in there

Hi Pat, we actually got him an iPod for his birthday this year and he learned how to put all his favorite operas on it and swears it saved his sanity this last time in the hospital. He's still fighting the wound infection on his abdomen (since surgery in April) and has chemo every Friday and feels pretty icky on Saturdays/Sundays, but is able to do some activities during the rest of the week.

Since this thread moved back up I thought I'd give you a copy of the email my stepmother sent last night after a trip up to NJ from MD to see the wound care doc and a subspecialist oncologist for his type of cancer.

Report on the CT scan didn't show any

cancer. We did pick up a copy of the actual scan and plan to have the

doctor down here check it out too. Thought the oncologist would be going

over it with us today. However, she was rushed and basically pulled up

the written report and quickly looked at that. She did apologize for not

having checked this out before we came; but I think we both were left

looking for more. I think she really knows her stuff and she did answer

any questions we had. She also asked if she could have her lab draw

blood for some tests and Dad did that. The report didn't say anything

about whether the left side of the liver was growing. We'll have to go

back again in December for another scan and a doctor appointment a week

after the scan. The oncologist wants to continue doing this every 3

months. The chemo should finish up by December. Dad's CA19-9 test last

week was elevated. Doctor wasn't too concerned about that; but she did

include that test in the ones that were done today.

Going to unpack and then just crash. Hope all is well with all of you.

Sounds pretty positive overall, Nina- with the exception of the elevated CA-19. I hope it's just a blip, not a harbinger. As I recall, any little inflammation, etc. can cause those tests to be increased. I'm sending continued good thoughts and prayers your way.
