My mother recently met someone at the casino of all places. she was sitting next to her, all of a sudden she starting coughing, my mom asked her if she was ok.. She told my mom she had a fainting disorder and coughing made it go away..Any insight on this one..

ethansmom
I don't know, I always feel more lightheaded after I cough, lol
briarrose
Coughing can increase blood pressure and restore perfusion to the brain.Coughing is an internal CPR. In many instances, this maneuver alone will bring a patient out of presyncope with restoration of color, heart rate, and blood pressure. calypso
I don't know about interrupting fainting, but it's been said that coughing can stop abnormal heart rhythms (i.e., the Valsalva maneuver is similar to the idea of coughing; plug your nose, close your mouth and blow). Sue
silly question..close your mouth and plug your nose/where do you blow from???????sue
MightyMouse
I think a more apt description of valsalva would be hold your breath and bear down. Nina
calypso
Thanks, Nina. Yep, I don't think "blow" quite made sense!Amy
