Jacquie802
Hi,I'm just wondering if anyone else here has problems swallowing large pills. They get stuck in my throat then I feel like I'm gagging on them...I take them with water, but I still have the same prob. It's the Midodrine 10mg I am having probs with so I don't think it's something I can split in half..Are there any tricks to make them go down easier?THanksJacquie
lthomas521
Ask the pharmacist if you can grind it up or something. By the way, always ask before chewing, dissolving, or grinding any medication. Some pills have a time-release feature that would be destroyed if you chewed it or ground it up. So you could get the entire day's dose all at once, which could make you very sick. Also, some pills have a special coating that protects the medicine from your stomach acid. MotleyLori
Have you tried swallowing it whole in a bite of applesauce or pudding? That is what we used to do when I worked in longterm care as so many elderly folk had trouble swallowing.I have esophageal dysmotility so I have the same issue,Lori

Sunfish
yeppers...i can have the problem with larger pills too at times. obviously ask your pharmacist first, but i know that my midodrine 10mg pills can be split without a problem, so that may be an option for you (in addition to the other already mentioned good suggestions). it's not a time-release med. melissa
Jacquie802
Thanks for all the suggestions! I do have an RX for the Midodrine 2.5 mg...I wonder if I could just take 4 of those at a time, since it would be easier. I'm going to have to check on that and see if I could.Once again thanks!Jacquie

pickledfairy
Jacquie,I worked as a child life specialist with pediatric oncology patients before getting sick and tricks and tips for taking meds became my speciality (just think of a four year old having to take 3 tabs of prednisone 4 times a day...all I can say is it is yucky!) Anyway, one trick to help a medication be more smooth would be to wrap it in a piece of your favorite flavor of fruit rollup....it makes the pill slippery as soon as the water hits it. I know it is a bit of a pain, but my kiddos used to tell me it covered up the yuckiness and also made it "slide down the shut" better. Hope this helps!!Sheridan
thejohnsongang
I actually would throw up from trying to take the Midodrine. The 5mgs wern't to bad, but the 10's were horrible. I talked to my cardio and he wrote me a prescription for the brand name of ProAmatine and they are wonderful. They are the size of a birth control pill and I don't have as many side effects from it. I was lucky that my insurance charges me the same generic price for the name brand as the cash price is $735.00. Check with your insurance and change if you can..it will help.I also found drinking out of a straw to take my pill helped the big one's go down better. Good luck... Jan
I can't swallow big pills either. I don't see any reason why you can't take 4 2.5 mg pills. When I get antibiotic capsules, I have them give me the smaller ones and take twice as many.
Eli6596
Oh my gosh, I had the same problem with the big white round 10mg mestinon tablets too. There was another post not too long ago about this pill causing problems. I switched back to two of the 5mg tablets. I swallow two of the 5mg tablets at once without problem. They are chaulky though, like the 10mg. I can swallow pills better with milk than water. The milk hides the taste too.Karyn
