Hi Guys,

I just got home from Cardio apptmt. and he's sending me to a new gastric doctor to see about me getting a gastric emptying study...The neuro I saw recommended it as well...Any info about it/ advice?!

Thanks,

Jacquie

Having brain fog here, but is the gastric emptying study where you have to eat radioactive oatmeal or scrambled eggs? If so, I had to eat the radioactive oatmeal. You can't taste the radioactive powder, it's tasteless. The test was like 2 hours long, and every 15 minutes you had to go and stand between a special x-ray type maching and it took a quick picture. It was a fairly simple test.....I hope I'm not telling you the wrong test lol. Good Luck!

You got it right Sunset...I had to eat the eggs. I was able to sit for the scanning part, as standing was too hard. It was very easy and painless.

I didn't get any choice. Eggs....and we lie down for it and snooze if you want. Sometimes they order reglan if your emptying time is slow to see if it helps, but you just need to tell your doctor if you don't want it.

A fair amount of people don't tolerate it (the reglan) well. All they really need to know is how long it takes your gut to empty and you don't need drugs for that....good luck sweetie....morgan

yep, had it. eggs and toast and water for me. i'm glad they are doing this test on you, i think it'll yield some answers as to why you have been battling nausea the way you have.....

one thing, many facilities believe that the FOUR HOUR gastric emptying study is only way to accurately access delayed gastric emptying. i know with my own personal experience, i had the two hour gastric emptying study and even though THAT was abnormal, i was told by my gastro that mayo clinic criteria for gastroparesis is that there is still 10% or more food within the stomach at FOUR HOURS. so because of this, he sent me back for the four hour emptying study.

there is major controversy on whether or not the two hour GES is accurate enough to detect delayed gastric emptying or whether the four hour GES is needed. i had to have the two hour, then had to go back for the four hour in order for my gastro to send me to a specialist. he wouldnt send me to any specialist without having the four hour study done (so i'm not really sure why he put me through the two hour in the first place??). anyway, just to save you some $$ and a heck of a headache and a couple trips in and out of the hospital for the SAME test, you might want to ask your doc about the accuracy btwn the two hour and four hour because i was told mayo clinic doesnt even look at two hour studies because they say the test isnt long enough to determine if there is a true deficit. i was abnormal on both the two and four hour.........

good luck, i hope they get some answers for you...

p.s. did you get my PM a week or so ago?!?! :)

I just wanted to add, that for me the getting up to stand between the x-ray thing every 15 minutes was really hard for me to do. I was blacking out a lot at that time and plus the test was early in the morning.

And cardiactec, I think my test might have been more than two hours...I think it may have been three, I don't think it was four, but looking back, I know it was not just two.

first time I had the eggs . Second time I had a HORRIBLE beef/liver stew at 8:00 in the morning. I literally had to hold and pray I wouldn't puke otherwise we couldn't do the test.

With the eggs I layed down for 3 hrs.

With stew I stood up every 15min for 3 hrs.

I really hope you get the answers you need to feel alittle better.
