ariella
HiAnyone advised to premedicate with antibiotics before a cleaning? Years ago when I was told that I have MVP (which has since been un-diagnosed) I was told to pre-medicate. Any POTS-only patients given the same advice?thanksAriella Edited January 15, 2006 by ariella
Jenn202
I've only heard of premedicating for MVP... I have had MVP diagnosed since I was 14.....It is essential to premedicate for dental procedures if you have MVP...... If not, Bacteria can possibly collect on the Mitral Valve making those candidates for a valve replacement later in life...Usually your GP or cardiologost will give a standing order for abx for your procedures... mom4cem
I take antibiotics also before cleanings. Also have MVP.
morgan617
I have mvp and don't do prophylaxis. I think it just depends on the severity of the mvp and the personal preference of your doctor and dentist. Some dentists won't work on patients without a note saying they don't or do need it, so it's pretty variable. morgan
gwen
I do premedicate and think its very important. friend of the family ignored his drs advice on this and the autopsy came back it was bacteria from the cleaning that went to his heart. Made a beliver out of me as he didn't have any other health problems.
Guest Belinda
Very important especially if you have ANY valve problems with your heart.
calypso
Ariella, I also was told I had MVP then was told I had a tiny, tiny bit of mitral regurgitation. So I premedicated for five years then stopped. I don't premedicate now. If the cardiologist who did your echo the second time was a good one, and is confident you don't have MVP, then I guess I wouldn't premedicate. If you are not sure, ask for one more echo.Amy
ariella
thanksI was told I don't have mvp, but do have some mitral regurgitation. Turns out I have an appointment with my primary today, so I'll bounce it off of him. I'm also on immune suppressants, which make me more susceptible to infection. Will let y'all know.ariella
BuddyLeesWife
I would definately ask about premedicating due to your immune suppression. My mom had a knee replacement and she has to premedicate for the rest of her life because having something foreign in you can increase your risk for infection. worththewords
I have to because I have a PFO hole in my heart. I think it is wise to do when you have any type of heart problem. Not worth the risk in my opinion
