Nausea

Recommended Posts

This is a new symptom for me. It started about a month or so ago with a episode of intense nausea that lasted all night. I woke up the next day and it was gone so I  brushed it off as something I ate. Then a week or so later it happened again. This past week it’s happened 3 times. The nausea is intense and only happening at night, nothing seems to help. I haven’t thrown up with it but it makes me burp a lot (sorry TMI)

Help!!!

???

Do you feel like your food is going down and staying down or if you bend over does it want to come up?

Odd question, but I'm trying to figure out if your stomach seems to be digesting and moving food.

My best guess is to try a sleeping wedge so that you don't sleep flat and see if that helps peristalsis, thus helping with nausea. It would help with acid reflux too.

You should probably run it by your doctor too. Either of those two problems need professional intervention. Of course, it could also be something else.

@Jessica_ nausea can be a part of dysautonomia. I get waves of really bad nausea and at times these waves last hours or all day. I take meds for these. But if the nausea continues for you you should really see a doctor, not only for meds but also possibly for a scoping.

Nausea can definitely be part of dysautonomia and there can be various causes.  Last month I had a 2 week time period of nighttime nausea (and acid reflux), along with a huge flare up.  This did resolve for me eventually.  Zofran helped.  I'm sorry, I know it is miserable.  I agree that it should be evaluated by a specialist if it continues.

For now, you can cut back on high fat foods and eat smaller meals until you can see your primary.  I think you are describing GERD.  I have a script for Omeprazole but you can also buy it over the counter. It works.

I get GERD symptoms but when they did the scope on me they found nothing. I had a stricture in my esophagus but no damage, no excessive acid, no h. Pylori, nothing. I just figure it is my body getting mad. I take Rolaids with gas relief to help the heartburn, but generally deal with it naturally. I had a bad reaction to the prilosec when they tried it on me. Made my POTS symptoms way worse. Ended up at the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Took me 3 days to figure out it was the meds. After that experience is when I started refusing to take meds unless they had done a test proving I had something before giving me the meds for it. If it is bothering you I would talk to your doc about meds, and if it really bothers you I would have them scope you and see if they can find anything.

Thanks everyone! I messaged my neurologist about it and he suggested Reglan? To help with stomach emptying. I’m reluctant to try it until I know if that is even the cause. I will try and get in with a GI doc to get some testing. My guess is it is GERD since I have had heart burn problems in the past

@Jessica_Be careful with Reglan since it can cause irreversible side-effects. I took it for a while when I was extremely ill with GI problems but my PCP warned me to only take it for 2 weeks tops. I also took Compazine, Phenergan and Zofran. Now Zofran is all I take as needed for nausea. It sounds like you may have issues with gas since you mention burping a lot. It might be helpful to stop dairy and gassy foods?

I totally agree on reglan; made me drool and my tongue shake, BADDRUG!. While in the hospital for nausea thirty years ago injections of compazine gave me lockjaw. 😞 Not fun. 😞 Obviously, none of us are diagnosticians, but we have similar problems and make some suggestions like looking at a basic GERD diet which is just some simple wise changes that might help you until you get to the doctor. I hope you feel better soon.

Ask for a gastric emptying test before taking meds for this. This is how I found out I have gastroparesis. My gastroenterologist then put me on a med called Domperidone, but many Gastroenterologist won't use it because it isn't approved in the US and has to be compounded. It changed my life for the better though.

One step at a time. It may be GERD only, or something else, but you don't have to go the Reglan route blindly. They should test before prescribing, in my opinion.

Thank you for the info @Pistol I will try a different diet first to see if I feel any changes. Milk has always gave me stomach aches but I usually ignore and drink anyway since I love it so much *sigh* more life altering for this illness. I have tried Zofran before and it aways gives me a headache! Phenegran knocks me out.

WOW @WinterSown ! Thank you for the warning that sounds awful! Luckily I am SUPER cautious when trying a new medication and usually won’t take anything unless I do my research and it feels right. This didn’t feel right since my doctor is blindly giving it to me as a “maybe this will work”.

Im glad you finally found relief with some medication @KiminOrlando I have looked into gastroparesis and I don’t think I have it but who knows. This illness likes to throw curve balls so maybe it’s just starting, either way I agree that I need testing! These doctors drive me crazy when they aren’t willing to dig deeper in our illnesses to figure out what the actual problem is. We sure have to advocate for ourselves!
