mae
Hey all,I went to the doc today and I'll go step by step and tell me what you all think..... He asked questions about my heart symptoms I have occasional palps and pains sometimes it feels like it skips. I told him I'm like on a rocking boat all the time unless laying down. He asked if I'd bring past echos and stress tests, and told me to wear the 24 halter and TTT next week and prescribed compression hoses. He checked my B/P sitting was 120/80 standing it told me jump up and do standing B/P HE said it didn't drop he checked it without any time in between I mean SECONDS!!!! He was about to leave the room and I said Do you even specialize in dysautonomia because he never brought it up okay .... he said Yes I know of it I use to run the dysautonomia lab in Ohio do you just want me to send you to Cleveland Clinic? I looked at him dumbfounded and was lost for a minute I said well you don't treat it? or DX it? He said I do heart surgery and work on the hearts electrical system I said well ummmmm does dysautonomia affect the heart ??? He again said you want me to send to Clev. clinic I looked at my husband and was about to BREAK DOWN CRY FLIP OUT and I said JUST DO THE TESTS YOU CAN DO I don't have insurance to just go to that clinic and I've been to 20 something doctors in the past year and I'm really sick of going through this I said your the doctor I came for Medical advise and your asking me what I wanna do . He said we are just human being we don't walk on water we are not GOD . I was speechless , basically this doc once was a doctor that specialized In dysautonomia and lost all interested he wants to do these tests and send me on my way. I felt uncomfortable and questioning myself was this a blessing to get this doc because he does know about this condition and he knows the doc in Cleveland personally or should I feel like this man is a Quack and a jerk and he had very bad bed side manner. It kinda seemed like if thats what I have no big deal you don't need HEART surgery your wasting my time. Anyway good thing is since I have this monitor on I have had some palps so I won't look like a hypo and it will record my rapid rate right????? Well there was my little story it just seemed so weird to me And he cared nothing about any of my other symptoms!Mae
babettess
Hi Mae,I'm so sorry your visit didn't go better. Hopefully after your tests he will be more understanding. The 24 hour holtor will give him a good idea of what your heart is doing and the TTT will be much more accurate than having your BP checked laying down and then standing up. Hang in there.Just wondering-Is a NASTY doctor who knows about POTS better than a NICE doctor who knows nothing about POTS? Or is it the other way around??I'm still on the search myself for a NICE doctor who KNOWS about POTS. I'm interviewing doctor #3 in a couple of weeks to see if he meets my standards. Riding that rocking boat with you,Babette

mae
Thank you all,I guess a doc that knows about it its a good thing but he seems to just not care like its no big deal!!! Yes I do have the monitor on as we speak and I will have TTT either wednesday or friday of next week I just wish he could of been alittle nicer and more informational, but from coming to this site I probally know as much as he does LOLMae**** and yes maybe he will take me more serious after the results of these tests fingers crossed
ana_22
i hate DRs like this.No DRS are certainly NOT GOD but they have had years of education and practise and experience, SO yes i think you are not being unrealistic when you look to them for GUIDANCE AND ADVICE. these kind of Drs give other Drs a BAD name.i would take up his offer and go to cleavland clinic. see how these test go first.good luck. Lizzegrl
Wearing my 30 day holter here and ,i have my TTT on thursday. my cardio seems to think its either pots or adrenal disorder ...but i think its the hyperadernal potsHow are you doing with the 30 day? My doc tried a 7 day which I had also had years ago, and I reacted so badly to the electrode patches that he wouldn't do a 30 day and after my EP study, he put in a Transoma loop recorder. Hope you TTT goes well and you get a diagnosis. As an aside, I've experiences both types of doctors, and in the end, the rude, nasty doc with some knowledge can at least be used to gain good information to take to a doctor that has both the bedside manner and the expertise. Accept what little he can offer, get the tests, and then gather your results and find another doc to see. Do you know that the University of Toledo Medical school has an Autonomic Disorders Clinic? It takes quite a while to get in, but I've loved it.
flop
It sounds like this doc wasn't able to communicate very well, possibly he felt awkward that you were obviously well read on dysautonomia and possibly knew more than him?He may well have done autonomic work in the past but things change and treatment of POTS has evolved so he may be a bit out of date. However he is ordering the right tests for you and has stated that it isn't his speciality and is willing to refer you on if he can't help. Some people go to local cardios and all they want is a referral to a specialist clinic like cleveland so perhaps he was trying to see if that was what you wanted and send you right away rather than costing you money seeing him?Sounds like it is worth getting the tests done (make sure you get copies of the results) and see what he says about the results. Then you can decide if you want to follow up with him or go elsewhere.Good luck,Flop
morgan617
Mae,My EP says I have runs of vtach, which can certainly be serious, but says we will address them when they become "lethal" I told him that would be when he is interrogating my pacemaker after it's removed from my body before I get cremated? he finds that hilarious. I don't.I guess your doctor at least admits he's not God, but he doesn't admit he's a jerk either. Some of these guys just have no bedside manner and never will. As nurses we used to say they would make great pathologists, never having to deal with the public at large. Many will cover their lack of knowledge with odd little attitudes that are hard to figure out. I don't like my EPS, but he is quite bright. My next visit, I intend to ask to transfer to a regular cardio, as he could care less about my rhythms or my pots. he may not like it, but a regular cardio can do just as well, or at least can't do any worse!I'm not sure why they act like this sometimes. If they have been in practice awhile, it just may be they don't want the challenge of "complicated" stuff anymore, so have a tendency to blow things off. He did at least get you on a monitor. Do not be surprised if they tell you everything is fine, even if you do have arrythmias. They just don't seem concerned as much as we feel like they should. A plague of symptomatic "benign" stuff should hit these guys for a couple of months and then maybe they would learn a bit more compassion, but I wonder if it would help.I hope you get some answers though and maybe once he sees that you do have stuff going on, he will have his attitude adjusted....morgan
