I'm not sure if this is related or not but...

When I go into a reaction, sometimes my nasal passages occlude - as if I had a cold - and it is very difficult to breathe through the nose. As I'm coming out of the reaction, my nose "clears up" but there is no drainage. It just opens up on its own.

I asked my ENT what's going on. While he said he'd never heard of a patient complaint like that (he's in his 60's and an award-winning ENT), he did add that there is a part of the nose anatomy that is controlled by the autonomic system. He felt it was reasonable for these episodes to occur given my dysautonomia issues.

This happens to me too and I was just diagnosed with Vasomotor rhinitis as well! :D

I don't know if this helps, but sometimes, right before a presyncope episode, I suddenly feel a relief of pressure in the area of my sinuses near my nose bridge, but at the top of my nose. Since I now realize I have this "relief of pressure", I notice the chronic pressure I have. No drainage, just tightness and pressure. Actually, I've been noticing more pressure in the sinuses on the inside of my cheeks. I hope at least some of this makes sense.

My 15 yo dd has been dx'd with vasomotor rhinitis. I wonder if this means she may be headed down the path I am on. :D

Hi everyone,

How exactly do you get dx'ed with vasomotor rhinitis. I think I have it, but I also have some really nasty allergies. How can the ENT tell the difference? Isn't it a dx of exclusion: if you don't have bacterial or fungal sinus problems, and you don't have allergic rhinitis, then you have vasomotor rhinitis? Or is there a test to tell the difference?

THanks,

Jennifer

Yes, I think vasomotor rhinitis is a diagnosis of exclusion - ie, you have symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but no allergy can be found on testing. The specialist I saw also mentioned that people with vasomotor rhinitis often mention that certain things, eg, cold air, make their symptoms worse where there clearly can't be an allergy and it's the same things that come up time and time again.

I get pressure in my nose, but mnore often I get it in my ears. The ear thing I know is related to blood pressure. I always thought the sinus pressure was related to my ear because the nose and ear are connected. Also, sinus pressure/pain can be a symptom of migraine headaches. It is all very confusing!

I get pressure in my ears too! Every time I bend over or burp, etc. If I try to valsalva, my ears squeak! When I bend forward, all the sounds get muffled and it feels like I'm diving in deep water. Is that a BP thing too?
