mkoven Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 So here's the new regime for preventing my vertebro-basilar migraines-- keppra. It's an anticonvulsant. she also wants me on plavix, for stroke prevention. Here's to hoping this works and I can tolerate it! Quote
sally Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Good luck with your new medication, I hope it works well for you. Quote
mkoven Posted January 16, 2008 Author Report Posted January 16, 2008 Took my first dose of keppra last night. All I can say so far is that it made me intensely sleepy-- which is okay before bed. I still feel a little drugged, but I imagine there's an adjustment period. I'll be increasing the dose very slowly. But no weirdo bp dips. Quote
MightyMouse Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Michele, nearly all of the anti seizure medications have the sedating side effect--some are also used to help folks sleep.Nina Quote
flop Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Hi Michele,I'm glad that your doctor has suggested a different medication for your migraines - I hope this one suits you better than the nimotop.Flop Quote
Mrs. Burschman Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Lyrica seems to make me a little sleepy (unless it's just the POTS!) It's an anticonvulsant, too. Other than that, I don't think it's given me any weird symptoms.I hope it helps prevent migraines. They stink!Amy Quote
AJVDK Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Hope it helps you will have to let us know how it does longer term, I am having a very hard time find a med that I can take and help with my headaces. Please keep us posted..... Wishing you pain free days ahead! Amy Quote
mkoven Posted January 16, 2008 Author Report Posted January 16, 2008 Thanks, you guys! Not that I'm particularly up on meds, but I'd never heard of it. It looks like there are some published studies on it as a preventive for migraines in children. It really knocked me out last night, so I don't know if she'll ever want me to take it in the morning. for the eye weirdness, I just have to keep closing my eyes, and then try to only look at one point. Eye strain seems like a big trigger for me now. i'm also bad about wearing my reading glasses, as I'm only slightly farsighted, but they help with eye strain. My computer screen also has awful glare. I just got an anti-glare for work, and will get one for home. I have bunches to read for tomorrow, so this should be fun-- not. Quote
pat57 Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 is this a replacement for the nimotop?what happened with that? Quote
mkoven Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 The nimotop dropped my bp and made my heart race-- nothing someone with ncs needs! Quote
ajw4790 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Yeah, many of the anti-convulsants can be VERY sedating. I don't notice it as much with Neurontin, but as I worked up to and adjusted to the Primidone it was AWFUL! I was like a zombie for two months or so while I titrated up to my puny dose. It can be hard to concentrate, move, just about everything! Not fun!!! Good luck! Quote
