Atenolol Side Effects?

I took atenolol today for the first time. My cardiologist wanted me on it to help my heart not work so hard. Also My neurologist wanted me on it to help my migraines, and my pediatrician wanted me on it to help my anxiety. So my cardiologist prescribed me to cut a 25 milligram pill in half to take to see if that helps and I will see him again in three months. I took the pill this morning and I just feel tired sluggish and fuzzy. did anyone else feel that way with atenolol? how long does it take to get used to the medicine? I also had a headache today . Thanks!

I have no experience with atenolol, but I tried three other beta blockers and I had similar reactions. In fact metoprolol was too much for me to handle so I was switched to bisoprolol after only one week. I tolerated bisoprolol much better. Then after I was diagnosed, my POTS specialist wanted me on propranolol. I was on a relatively small dose of it and while I did have some adjustment period, it was not too bad. It may take a while (days to weeks) for your body to adjust to the meds, and you're the only one who can weigh the pros and cons. If this is bothering you try getting a hold of your prescribing doctor or even your pharmacist and see what they recommend.

I hope this helps.

Alex

I thought I replied, but I don't see it.

Have you checked your blood pressure? Mine tended to run around 90/50 on atenolol and I felt tired and more dizzy. I think I took it for about a week before I called my doctor and he changed me to betaxolol. I've been ok on it. It lowers my heart rate about 20 bpm and my blood pressure is staying up in the 110's/60's.

So, if you don't feel any better in a few days, call your doc and see if they'll change you to something else. Good luck!

Similar to Alex, I have not taken atenolol but have tried 2 other bb's. Metoprolol made me a little tired but was not that bad but unfortunately made my breathing very difficult over time (I have mcas as well as pots). Just to see if I tolerated a different bb better, we tried an extremely small dose of propanolol and I reacted the way you are describing....I was like a zombie. At first, I thought it was just a bad flare of fatigue associated with my pots but then I realized it might be another reaction to the bb. I stopped taking it and my fog lifted. I talked to my immunologist about it since he's the one that wanted to try the drug. He said that it would not be unusual for a patient on a large dose of this class of meds to experience this side effect and that I must have a very high sensitivity to this side effect. Of course, he said to stay off of it.

If you feel the reaction you are having is extreme, please speak to your doctor about it.
