What Is It When It Feels Like Your Sugar Drops But It Is Fine?

Anyone know what could cause a feeling like your sugar drops or is low but your glucose reading is normal? A weak shaky feeling but no actual shaking? Glucose, BP, Hr is all normal, I have been getting this a lot the last few days.

Thanks

Depends are you Diabetic or Hypoglycemic? I have Hypoglycemia and I used to get bad drops when I didn't know how to eat right. I still get that feeling from timeto time. I'm pretty good at not only eating right but noticing the signs before it gets too low. But still sometimes I feel like it's low. I get that sudden extreme hunger and I'm nervous for no reason. Most of the tiem this happens it's about 70 something on the meter. Which isn't technically Hypo. But I had read that sometimes you feel symptoms based on how fast your sugar is dropping. So I chalk it up to that when I feell that way. i just usually get some fruit and nuts to make sure it stays up. This is jsut me though.;)

No Its not my sugar that is fine not hypoglycemic or diabetic. I thought maybe adrenaline surge but can you have an adrenaline surge with no tachycardia?

hippychick,

I used to get that feeling alot. I spent months tracking down my labile blood sugar issues with the help of two endocrinolgists. We figured out I do not have true hypoglycemia, which means my levels don't drop below 60. But I do have unstable sugars in that they can plummet very quickly, especially after eating. This is called reactive (or post pranial) hypoglycemia. While eating protein with every meal and snack helps, and through the help of a diabetic educator and dietician, I was able to sort out steps to help mitigate my fluctuating sugars, and most importantly figure out how to stop the bouncing around (sugars are very reactionary and can bounce up and down when out of control).

Even with home blood sugar testing, I missed many of these surges or drops, but we caught them with continuous glucose monitoring.

On a side note, was advised to carry those sugar tablets or candy and take one when I felt my suagars low, but they made me feel horrible. I later realized they contain artificial dyes and artifial sweetners, which triger my MCAS symptoms. I now carry sugar packets and a granola bar with protein to use when I feel my sugars become unstable while away from home. The sugar is to boost blood sugars out of my low and the protein is to lessen the swinging and keep a level release of insulin. This has been working for me.

Best wishes,

Lyn

Lyn- Thanks for passing on that info! That's very helpful to know. While I do have documented hypogylcemic episodes, I also have times where I feel like I should have a low reading but they're not that low. I have caught some pretty big drops over very short periods of time though, so I suspect this is the cause. Thanks for sharing your insights!

Chaos,

My pleasure. I see we both have autonomic neuropathy and many of the same diagnoses. My autonomic neurologist suspects that my significant OH and plummeting BP likely triggers my sugars to become unstable. And my mast cell specialist believes my mast cells are responsible for my unstable BP AND the unstable sugars. I do find that I have far less issues when my mast cells are happy. Taking my mast cell meds three times a day has really helped limit those drops.

Also, I learned it is likely that your blood sugar levels drop, and by the time you test with your home kit, your pancreas has cranked out more insulin to raise your sugars. The CGMS really helped me identify when my sugars were low and now I know to treat them before I end up in the swinging phase.

Best wishes,

Lyn

This was a great question and lots of good info in here. I get this feeling a lot too and it's horrible!! Sometimes I will eat and eat and eat to try and get the feeling to go away. Thanks for all the great info, I'm going to try some of these!!

I do this too. I was dx with hyperinsulinemia via gtt + insulin. Meaning my body over produces insulin in response to sugar. So my body has trouble maintaining an acceptible glucose level. I start feeling bad when my glucose gets into the low 80's.

I've found that eating something like raisins, dates or an orange followed by a few nuts bring it back up the quickest.

I'm also on the mast cell protocal (self diagnosed at this point). I'm responding well as far as oi and energy go but my glucose is still a problem. If I'm active I have to eat every 30 minutes or else my

glucose drops and I have a petite mal.

I have no idea how to stop ths but I'm happy to have found treatments that work. Kow.

I know you said HR BP and such were normal but you don't know what they were right before. For me I have 2 types of episodes like this. One high one low. When my BP drops too fast (can be from top of normal to bottom of normal its more about the difference between) I get lethargic and heavy, its like my face could be falling, my eyes water and lifting my hand to do anything about is too much effort. I have also had mild convulsions. When my HR goes up I am all tachy, sweaty and panicked Again I can be in a normal range it just has to do with how far the jump was.
