Poor Circulation?

Recommended Posts

Does poor circulation add to flare ups? It seems like it feels to me anyway i have poor circulation and maybe blood volume. An example of this would be lift my arm up at times i will feel it warm up and get flush like blood flushing in or out of it. Also when after i eat i start burping like crazy, maybe due to blood pooling? Wierd enough though i also start burping sometimes when i stand up to walk around??? I was thinking about drinking a few glasses of OJ a day also as its said to improve circulation.

i have the same burping problem!!! when i stand i start burping, when i eat i start burping!

do you have alot of nausea? is pots very disabling for you?

i have mild nausea SOMETIMES. Lately symptoms have been like this, and it really does screw up any normal life funciton it seems.

-Excessive burping, worsens on standing or starts from standing, feel like tons of air trapped or gas even, lots of painful pressure. Usually when this happens i have or feel like im having palpitations.

-Headache, usually on one side or another

-Flushing in limbs occasionally, and limb pain, aches and cramps

-racing heart sometimes upon standing(that i can physically notice)

-tingling, twitching, pulsing in limbs or head or random spots on body

-Standard Chest pain of course

-Shortness of breath sometimes, not as much lately.

Can you relate to any of this?

The impaired circulation is because of POTS not the other way around. When blood flow starts becoming sluggish to the heart and brain your body shoots of epinephrine and norepinephrine in a bid to re-regulate the circulatory malfunction occuring and this causes vasoconstriction of the hands, arms, feet and legs. Raynuads...

I think that it may be due to my poor circulation I cannot keep my arms over my head. It would trigger a cascade of symptoms if I left my arms over my head but I just don't do that anymore.

The other question related is: what caused the poor circulation in the first place? Are my nerve fibers not working? Are my red blood cells carrying enough oxygen?

I have the SAME symptoms!!! You should read my symptom list that was my first post. The pulsing/heartbeat internally is the most annoying. I feel it in my stomach or in my head the most often...and I can visually see it! If I Put the remote or something on my stomach, you can see it rocking back and forth, and sometimes if I close one eye and stare at something with the open one, I can see my head rocking up and down with my pulse! Have you found anything that makes this worse/better?

im still doing some research and new diets(Not to lose weight) etc. Its funny you should mention it being visible my girlfriend said she saw my pulse moving up and down in my temples for a moment than it went away.

this is what i want to know how can i improve circulation and blood volume, and why is it impaired exactly?

I thought I was just crazy! You can literally see my hearbeat in my stomach, and it makes things move when placed there (like the remote you mentioned). If my veins are so floppy and circulation so inefficient, how can this be?

have you lost any weight? I think mine could be party due to weight loss. But its wierd when this first started i didnt lose THAT much weight, and i noticed it. I asked a medic why my stomach pulse was visible, she said its normal. But it wasnt normal for me before..

Its not really that complicated. Either you have excessive vasodilation of the vessels in your arms causing blood to run out of them if you raise your arms when you stand or they are overly constricted in a bid to stabilise the blood flow abnormalities found in POTs as my previous post explained.

One of the key features of POTS is that our blood ends up in the wrong places - sometimes pooling in the legs, sometimes pooling in the abdomen, sometimes just generally not where it should be. The heart works hard to pump the blood to where it needs to go (the harder the heart works, the faster it beats).

When you lift your arms up above your head you add the problem of gravity into the mix. The blood that was in your arms will mostly flow downhill back to your chest. In order to get fresh arterial blood up to your fingers the heart will have to work harder to overcome gravity and the up-hill direction of the arteries in the raised arms. Because the heart works harder we feel more symptoms when our arms are elevated.

A simple way to see the effect of gravity on blood flow to the arms is this (works for almost everyone, this is not a POTS thing): hold both hands out infront of you - they should both be the same size, same colour and the veins should look similar. Then raise one hand right up in the air and let the other hang down by your side (if you have POTS sit down to avoid feeling too ill!). Stay like that for a minute or two then quickly bring both hands together in front of you and compare them. Usually the hand that was elevated will be pale and the veins will be less visible, the hand that was down may be slightly swollen, darker/purpleish colour and the veins will be more prominent. The changes rapidly return to normal.

Those of us with POTS have a problem keeping blood in the right parts of our bodies. It is not "poor circulation" as in the usual use of the term which is what happens when the arteries supplying blood to the peripheries are narrowed or blocked (often due to high cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension causing atherosclerosis).

I hope this makes sense?

Hi,

I wanted to pop in and add a couple of things...

I too have the frequent burping issue and have had it for many years, but I have not noticed it to be position related. Many times though it does feel like a way to try to get more oxygen or gasping for air. It is weird and VERY annoying! My family finds it funny and thinks I can help it. But, it can't helped, and I have found if I hold it back it makes that symptom worse, along with some of my other symptoms.

Also, to a degree, visible pulses are quite normal (or some of what you described may have been respirations when talking about your stomach). They are likely due to forceful beats of the heart as it is trying to adequately circulate blood to all parts of your body. Also, after a while many of us just become more intuned to our bodies, and notice things we didn't before.

As far as working on poor circulation etc. that is something that you have to work on with a dr. If you don't see a specialist, try to find one. Things that can be used are salt and fluid loading, compression hose, abdominal binder, meds (midodrine, florinef etc.), exercise etc... There are no easy fixes or likely anything that is just going to magically fix things. It is something to work on over time in multiple ways described earlier.

I have poor circulation due to small fiber neuropathy, EDS, and whatever else is going on...

:)

I ment to say something about the abdominal pulstaions too (sorry, brain-fog!).

The main artery coming from the heart is the aorta. It comes out the top of the heart then makes a U-turn and goes down the centre of the chest and into the abdomen. It has branches going off to all the internal organs then it divides in 2 to go down the legs.

The size of the aorta in the abdomen is about 2-3cm in diameter (much fatter than a hose-pipe). Everytime the heart beats it forces waves of blood down the aorta. In somone who is of slim build it is quite normal to be able to feel and see these pulsations.

Call it whatever you want. I am FREEZING cold, my hands and feet and I hate it. My florinef and midodrine help many symptoms but not this. I am literally burning my feet on a blow heater atm and winter hasn't really hit melbourne yet. What am I gonna do!

I think pp was directing this question too. We all know its blood pooling but how can we minimise it?
