yogini
I've used a heat pack all of these years on my neck and shoulders. I've been using an ice pack this week because I had my wisdom tooth out and put it on my neck. It actually feels great. I never thought of using ice before because I hate the cold. Heat is great for my pain but I think ice actually feels better...
Chaos
I use ice for all pain except muscle spasms. I've been a fan of ice for a long time.
gjensen
I like them both for different things. Toothaches, I like the rice sock. I use it to help moderate my head stuff to. Muscle pains or stuff like that, I prefer ice.
yogini
I realized that ice has the added benefit of increasing my BP, esp when it is on my neck. I am definitely using it more often from now on.
LastUnicornLady
For me, it depends on what kind of pain it is. I usually end up using heat, because it's most helpful with my muscle spasms, which are what I normally need it for.
targs66
Someone once told me that ice is very helpful if you have inflammation, and that heat makes inflammation work. I've tried ice on a sore back and it did feel much better than heat. However, I really don't know how one determines whether their pain is the result of inflammation?! westernmass
Heat heat heat! I'm a convert since starting Chinese medicine school. In their perspective, cold constricts, which would worsen circulation to the area and therefore worsen muscle pain or healing to an area. I know a lot of doctors and physical therapists say ice, or alternate ice and heat, but since switching to straight heat I feel some more relief.
