Altruism
Hi,I just got back my results from my 24 hr sodium test and my doctor literally said "reduce salt intake and do not even consider salt loading anymore"! She said that ideally in POTS patients the sodium in urine should be about 170-180 and mine came back at 320!I was salt-loading for 2-3 days, but I normally eat very healthy high protein low-carb diet and I have never consumed lots of salt in my life.Do you have any suggestions what could be causing this? Aldosterone issues? Adrenal fatigue? Salt-wasting?My plasma sodium levels are high normal (142). Another weird thing was that the 3L urine container that was given to me for 24 hr urine collection was full after 12 hours. I have crazy high urine output as well (over 3.5-4 L). I drink about the same amount of water, but it looks like I'm losing it all?Have you ever had high instead of the typical for POT patients low sodium in urine? Thanks! Mytwogirlsrox
Very interesting.Diabetes insipidus causes a large volume of urine. There are salt wasting disorders.Hopefully this is the key to helping solve your pots puzzle.
Altruism
Am I the only one?
clairc
Mine was the opposite, my urine sodium was 54. I'm still waiting to speak to the POTS nurse to see what that means.
angelloz
Finally someone else. I am 54 years old and now I always ask for 2 jugs with a 24 hour urine test because of the high volume output. I have had doctors say I am drinking too much water, however doctors say to hydrate, hydrate ...you know the drill. I think even with added salt I can't absorb it...one of my earliest symptoms was urinating large amounts at a time..when before I would not do that. Strangly I was also incontinent for about a month..then that totally resolved.I wish doctors could reach some sort of consenses on some of these things.Angelloz
YolaInBlue
My sodium level in 24 hr. collection is 471. So far my doctors only note that it's high, no explanation for it. My plasma level is normal. I also had unusually high volume and needed 2 containers for 24 hr. collection. I do drink a lot and take 2-3 salt tablets a day. I'm on Florinef. I salt foods as usual. I don't ever eat fast food or salty snacks, so I don't know where it comes from. I visited a dysautonomia specialist in Pensacola, FL and he told me to continue what I've been doing and not to worry as long as my plasma level is ok.471 seems really high, maybe it is a piece to a puzzle. I'm really interested if you can find a possible explanation.
anna
One of my son's had a random urine osmolality of 430 and high serum sodium at 147 urine sodium 300 so he was sent for a water deprivation test to rule out Diabetes insipidus. As the test was 'relatively normal' the paediatrician ruled out DI my son's POTs Dr. told him to keep up the sodium regardless! that was in 2008 But now this November just gone, our geneticist has explained he feels my other son's reduced mental agility may be down to another genetic condition that is linked to salt wasting, so we are very confused as to what is going on now, just wait for results to come back! badhbt
I also had to use 2 containers for the test. My serum sodium was 140 and my 24 hour urine was 347. I have an appointment today and I am going to ask about it. I have a funny feeling it will be "normal".................uggggghhhh
peregrine
Urine sodium the day after I saw the autonomic nervous system neurologist was 316 with 2.65 liters of urine (I'd been doing about 6g a day at that point); after I started on 10g of salt a day it was 400? 600? again 2.65L. She told me over the phone and I forgot, but she said to stop loading quite so heavily. Now I take 6g. Since I have no issues with salt retention, etc (and my BP is usually fluctuating but rarely too low), she didn't want to put me on Florinef (*shrug*).
