sue1234
I had my endoscopy today, and once again, have gastritis. I've had like 4 out of 5 scopes in the last ten years show gastritis. So, I was looking once again at the main causes--alcohol(none for me), nonsteroidal pain relievers(I maybe take 2 a year!) and h. pylori(which very well could be hiding in there undetected!). I did alot of reading a year or two ago, and had a post with research on it. I haven't yet gone back to reread it, but was looking around PubMed and ran into this. I am just posting it because it is pertinent to alot of people here. It is a new article that talks about gastric cancer being linked to h. pylori and/or also high salt intake. I didn't want to just disregard it.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21875268

abnel
It's a bit worrying really. I wonder if the consequences could be different for us compared to the rest of the population. I know we're told to increase our salt intake but my POTS specialist admitted that the long term consequences of a high salt diet in POTS patients is currently unknown. He would prefer it if I could get to the point where I no longer need as much salt as I currently take and in the same breath said the amount I take would do little therapeutically to help me anyway. I currently take 3000mg of sodium chloride tablets and add salt to my food. I am fairly sure that some time ago I read that there is a higher rate of stomach cancer amongst the Chinese in China than in most other countries. I think the authors speculated in that article that it could be related to the fact that some population groups in China eat a lot of fermented food, like fermented soy beans, etc.
sue1234
Dr. Oz is having a show today on stomach cancer. They actually talked about the risk factors, and besides h. pylori being a high risk factor, they actually did say that fermented food AND salt were big causes. Dr. Oz said something about that if someone stays with the WHO recommendation of under 5 grams, they should be okay. He said that they see the problem come in in certain societies when people are taking in up to 9 grams of salt.I'm trying to figure out why fermented food is so bad?? I mean, out in the health-food world, everything is all about fermented food! I mean, kimchi, yogurt, all the fermented drinks, etc. I can understand the pickles and salt connection, and I can understand the soy connection, but they showed beer, too, which I don't think of as a salt-laden drink. I wish they would have made the distinction about what fermented foods or all fermented foods.I was watching the show as the Carcinoid group I frequent gave a heads up abouth the gastric cancer topic today. sue1234
In their biopsy, they did not find the h.pylori. I still wonder, though. One time I took a full dose of metronidazole(?) and the bloating went totally away for a few weeks! It felt wonderful. But, then it came back.
