Hi Toni,

Did these strange symptoms start after you started a new medication, specifically an anti-depressant or a beta-blocker? If so, these medications can cause a lot of bizarre symptoms (more so the anti-depressants, but the beta-blockers can cause nightmares and unusual nightime disturbances), so perhaps that is the cause. You should check with your doctor if these happenings seem to be related with starting a new medication because they certainely seem scary. Hang in there! Any word yet on getting an appointment with an autonomic specialist?

Hallucinations can happen with severe depression. Not all hallucinations indicate psychosis (as in detachment from reality). Try not to be alone too much. If your hallucinations have a theme, try to resolve feelings related to that.

Ditto about medication and side-effects. Are you on steroids? Like Florinef? Steroids are famous for inducing psychosis, hallucinations, and more.

Don't be too scared. These things happen more frequently than imagined, to perfectly normal people who are under totally abnormal stress or medication that does not suite their body chemistry.

Hi Toni,

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like hynogogic hallucinations. Very common with sleep disturbances. People see and hear things when they are going into and coming out of sleep, sort of a half-awareness...but really freaky! There are also REM sleep intrusions when dreams happen during partial or complete awakenings. Fortunately they can occur due to simple sleep deprivation, unfortunately they can also happen due to other disturbances (like ANS problems.) I had what I believe now was REM sleep intrusion in my doctor's office, in front of him: his carpet turned into worms and crawled across the floor. If I had actually believed it was happening, I would have freaked out completely! Fortunately I was so exhausted that I accepted whatever I saw as coming from sleep deprivation and did not believe what I was seeing. I'm not sure I was physically able to freak out at that time anyway. :) At the time I was in the worst POTS crash I have ever had and I don't want to ever be that sick again!

Try to calm down, and don't think you are going crazy!

from Wikipedia:

Hypnagogic hallucinations and hypnopompic hallucinations are considered normal phenomena. Hypnagogic hallucinations can occur as one is falling asleep and hypnopompic hallucinations occur when one is waking up.

Hi,

I agree with what everyone else has said. The acid symptoms does sound a lot like GERD/reflux. If you haven't already discussed this with your dr, try and do so. You could possibly try treating it with medication.

For the sleep stuff, it does sound semi-similiar. I know some meds for me cause more vivid and weird dreams (and before I don't even remember dreaming...). :)

i just realized that i didn't answer any questions that you guys asked?! sorry - brain fog!

regarding the auditory hallucination i had - i started effexor a couple of weeks ago and i haven't had a hallucination prior to that so maybe it's from the medication??

and in regards to the autonomic specialist - i'm going to ask my family doctor to refer me to dr. carlos morrillo - i'll let you know how it goes tomorrow - hopefully successful!
