Peripheral Neuropathy

A couple of years ago I just had burning in my feet, now it's in my arms and back. I have been feeling it in my back all day, and it's uncomfortable for me. I was taking topamax 3, 25 mg. pills twice a day, preventitive for migraines, I think this drug can be used for peripheral neuropathy, anyway, I cut back to 1 pill twice a day, so instead of taking 150 mgs. a day I take 50 mgs. a day. I didn't notice the burning when take 150 mgs. a day unless I had some sort of nervous system attack. Is there testing that can be done to see what causes this uncomfortable burning, and is there medication out there to reduce the symptoms. And no, Lyrica didn't work.

I don't have any clue to what your meds may do or not do, sorry about that.

I just wanted to hope you figure out what to do.

I do have bouts of the painful burning on my hands and feet, and it is usually a sign that I have triggered my ANS. I may have caught a virus, or I have an infection. I also get this just when I may be starting to have an allergic reaction to it.

I know someone with MS who gets burning on her back, head, neck and legs. She uses cold compresses to relieve these symptoms. She is quite a sight with her dripping facecloth draped over her head! But it offers her some relief.

feel better,

I was diagnosed with autonomic dysfunction, small fiber neuropathy, complex regional pain syndrome and mild POTS in January; I was told possibly some genetics involved but I also believe a series of necessary pelvic surgeries caused severe nerve damage. I have had pain, numbness and tingling, burning sensations, and a multitude of other symptoms for years. I have been to a variety of doctors in every specialty there is. I've tried all sorts of medications, including Lyrica and Neurontin. It wasn?t until I found an ANS specialist this January and was finally properly diagnosed that I had been finding some relief from some of the symptoms.

My ANS (neurologist) has me taking Topamax (50 mg twice a day). He had tried to go higher with the dose but I had memory and concentration problems at higher doses. The current dose of Topamax (I've been on it since March) is helping with my neuropathy symptoms.

I take Atenalol for tachycardia, Ultram for pain, and a few other medications for allergies and asthma. I also take some vitamins and nutritional supplements. It is amazing what a proper diagnosis and the right medications can do. Not all medications work the same for individuals - it can be trial and error to find out what works for you - talk to your doctor and see what options are available to you. I hope you find relief too.
