Saw my Lyme doctor yesterday...

I had my postpartum visit with my autoimmune specialist yesterday. Now, when I was pregnant with Alex last year I got the news that I tested positive for Lyme. Based on the results, my doc thinks that my body is fighting it off very well thus explaining why POTS symptoms have been at bay and managable for the last few years. BUT I have also been pregnant and/or nursing since April 2002 which he beleives has helped the situation to remain stable, thanks to all those good hormones that keep so many illnesses under wraps for moms who would otherwise be sick.

Anyway, he wanted me to come back after the baby was born for treatment, but we researched the antibiotics he wants to use and none have been studied in nursing moms. I was so bummed, I am really looking forward to getting treatment and seeing what happens with the POTS. Trying not to get my hopes up but at least wanting to know. I am doing pretty well right now, exhaustion is my biggest obstacle as usual but he seems to want to wait until I quit nursing (which could be a while) or I get really sick. But he wants me to nurse as long as possible because it is helping me stay well, so it's a tough situation. Anyone with Lyme ever had anything like this happen? During pregnancy or lactation? I am also looking for info on how it affects children born to moms with Lyme- doc seems to think we should get the kids tested one the baby is at least 6 months.

You might want to seek out a lyme-specific forum, as you're more likely to get a relavent response to your question about tx during lactation. :) Nina

I am a mom who is practicing extended breastfeeding. Your local La Leche League group should be able to refer you to a consultant. There is a book that they use it is called Medications adn Mothers' Milk by thomas hale, PhD. I too have the problem of getting medicines because drs do not know about them. Quiting nursing while this POTS stuff is going on just adds to problems to me. Jennifer

Jennifer,

I also practice extended breastfeeding which is why I am not willing to quit nursing to take these meds just yet (Alex is only 2 months old). I am a member of La Leche League actually. I have made contacts with several leaders to try and get more detailed info about it that I can share with my doctor, via Hale's Medications & Mother's Milk as well as other references regarding Lyme and breastfeeding.

I posted on this forum b/c I know a lot of other people here have tested positive for Lyme, and was hoping at least one had encountered a treatment issue while breastfeeding as I know also a lot of moms here have nursed at some point. I guess it's kind of a rarity though but I got some great info (thanks to the other Jenn!!) on some forums I can go to that are Lyme specific so I will check those out too.

Thank you!!!
