Chest Pain--Only When Lying Down

Recommended Posts

I've been having chest pain episodes at night--thinking it is POTS-related but not sure. they only happen if I wake up after I have started falling asleep or have been asleep, early on in the night. I don't think the pain is waking me up--it's more like I start to wake up and then I start to have the pain.

I never wake in the AM with this pain. The pain lasts maybe 1-2 minutes at most and then disipates. Sometimes there is a feeling of pressure too. I also am finding that I can feel a little dizzy at night, when lying down. This seems new. I definitely recognize this chest pain from when my POTS was worse, but I think I remember only feeling dizzy when upright in the past, I think it is odd to feel dizzy when lying down and not at all when upright.

Anyone else experience any of this? I do intend to go in to see my specialist soon for my annual appointment...

  • 2 weeks later...

I sometimes get left chest pain at night when I go to bed. I do have GERD and take 2 meds for stomach issues, one at bedtime. This does not feel like GERD to me but I know I passed my heart stress test and have answered 'yes', explaining when asked at cardiology follow-ups. It doesn't happen often. Even more rarely, I may have it start when I lie on sofa (seems worse if lying on left side or back). If it starts in the day like that, then I may feel intermittent pain (almost like some kind of spasm). My heart rate and from a neurological standpoint, sweating standpoint I don't notice anything different. Sometimes the pain will go a little into my neck or shoulder but again--stress test okay and I have neck and shoulder problems. Echo was ok save the mitral/tricuspid valve thickening and mild/mod regurg and pericardial effusion which docs/cardiologist assure me are nothing of concern. I had even trying to use a wedge to sleep with head of bed elevated but being a side/stomach sleeper, that doesn't work well for me. I may use it til the point I feel I am drifting into sleep then toss it off the bed.

For some reason my bp is at it lowest when lying down. After say 10 mins of being in bed i start getting flushing, im no sure what sort of flushing it is though. I think it might be related to low bp. If this happens a lot i can get chest pain. A 24 hr monitor picked up runs of tschycardia lasting about 4 secs if hr 160.

Momto Guiliana. I have been wondering why my bp is so low lying down. I clue came when i started florinef 3 weeks ago. Before that i was constantly thirsty with a dry mouth and was pooing and peeing all day and night. Now with the blood volume enhancement florinef gives me i suddenly am not as thirsty anymore and i have normal saliva levels. The diarrohea and ployurea has also improved. Before i got pregnant i had a very low sodium diet (because i thought it was healthy). Now combine that with hyperhidrosis, and constant vomiting and diarrohea for 3 months of pregnancy and what do you get-hypovolemia. Then top that off with blood loss during c section and mcad response to the anaesthetic (i shook and sweated like i had malaria) and i think that equals hypovolemic shock. I think my body has been trying its hardest and has overcompensated and hence the high standing bp and hr over the last year. The las few monhs though my standing bp has been low (it has gradually lowered over the year). Im currently investigating adrenal burnout as a pontential contributor to this new low bp problem as i have no signs of pooling. I have just been watching some med lectures on youtube which explain the renin angiotensin system. Its no wonder i had massive anxiety as the symp nervous system is triggered by low blood volume. Just a theory. How similar were your post preg symptoms to mine? Oh, i should add that florinef has reduced my lying flushing problem.

post pregnancy it sounds like I was similar to you Annaliese. I had high bp and high heart rate and anxiety. I had lost enough blood during delivery to need a blood transfusion. I believe my blood volume was chronically low (I did not have a diagnosis and did not understand the need to increase fluid and salts for one thing). Over time I also started having episodes of low bp instead of high.

I was thinking this might be trapped gas too. I get this too but 9/10 if I sit up I burp like a sailor.

Have you tried sipping on 1 tsp acv in 8 oz of water ? Or taking gas x ? Probiotics help sometimes too.

At least if these worked, you'd know it was digestive or not ...

I actually ended up in the er the first time this happened. It was before I knew about my

food intolerances and had just eaten a wondeful bowl of extra creamy potato soup.

Can you imagine how often they see this in the er ? Woman versus soup, take 100,000,000 ..
