My cardiac electrophys just put me on Florinef and said to take it with food. He laughed when he said that becuase I cant keep to much food down- Gi says Im regerjatating. SO I asked if I could take it right before I go to bed with a piece of bread so I dont get nausaus. He said yes. Asked my gerneral POTS dr if I could start taking it (heaven forbid I dont get her approval! ) She siad take it in am. But like I siad, was worried about foods that will keep it down, at least at night b 4 bed, I can eat and I dont wake up in the middle- so its gaurenteed to stay down. What do you all think? When am I going to see the most results? Any food suggestions? THANKS!

hey there,

i'd try and take it in the morning since the full effects of the med will be in your system throughout the day when upright. it really doesnt make a whole lot of sense to take it at night because you are supine/sleeping and by the time you wake up, be it 10 hours later the med is pretty much out of your system..........so i think it may help you more (with your symptoms during the daytime) to try and take the florinef in the morning.........

sorry your nauseous. i know EXACTLY how you feel. i'd try saltines, bland foods.....chicken broth or beef broth is good for upset tummies (at least for mine) and plus you get the added benefit of the salt (which is primarily what florinef is for, to help retain salt in the blood, hence increasing blood pressure/volume)..........

florinef is a long-acting med that will take some time to build up in your system....and once it's there will be there for a bit, even after/if you stop taking it. thus - theoretically - it shouldn't matter what time of day you take it. i'm not saying it's impossible for a given individual to notice a difference in how s/he feels depending on when s/he takes the med, but in terms of its half-life & concentration in the body it really shouldn't make much difference.

during my years on florinef (though i'm no longer on it now) i took it in the morning at times & in the evening at times. i don't mean i switched back & forth but that for long periods i did one or the other consistently. there were times when i took it both times as well. honestly i never noticed a difference related to when i took the med.

since you've been told something different by each doc i would personally go with whenever you'll be most likely to keep it down & remember to take it consistently.

hope this helps,

 melissa

Jess,

You sound just like my son. He is generally very nauseous in the AM, but can eat pretty well at night. It sounds like you may have GI motility problems- Have you checked into that? My son takes .2mg of florinef daily. One in the AM & one in the PM. Any chance you could split your dose to keep a high level in your system consistently?

Because Mack has motility problems, he also takes eyrthromycin (as a prokinetic), Nexium (for GERD- regurgitation) and zofran for nausea. The combo of these GI drugs help him keep the florinef down. Are you taking anything to help with the severe nausea?

Best of Luck to YOU.

Julie

Thanks for all the replies. I must clarify- I as off right now- DO NOT get nasuas- my Doc just said take .1 mg 1 time a day with food- so that I dont become nausas as a side effect. As far as the Gi probs.. we are still in the process of figuring that out- my barium swallow showed dysmotility in esophugus- and my dc thinks that maybe my Raunderds is cuasing my esphugus muscle to not work properly..... getting scoped next month. My thing is that once I start eating- I regerjatate- so I usually skip breakfast and take my pills at 5 am 7 and 9- and then again at 10 pm- and if I do eat before 9 I take them at 1 30 am. Else like I said, the food doesnt stay down- but with my gabupenten that I take, I dont need to take it with food- so it isnt as big a prob. But will try the saltines, and the am is sounding like something I should try. Thanks!!

If you take Florinef in the evening your cortisol levels will be sky high as it does have some cortisol like effect. I've always heard that it's best not to take it late in the day as this can long-term cause your adrenals to become affected and possbily cause Addisons.

I have been taking it spaced out throughout the whole day otherwise I end up peeing every 2mins at night and don't sleep but very worried bout taking it at night. So I'm trying to change it now to taking it first thing, then around 2/3pm and thats it. Even though the specialist says take it all in one go first thing but that doesnt work for me and I think most POTs people. He doesnt know a huge amount about POTS , I think he only knows that you take Florinef for Addisons and you take it all in the morning, hence what he said to me.

many of the top autonomic docs have patients take forinef in the morning & at night so i don't think people generally need to be concerned about it being problematic/risky to take at night. of course an individual situation could be different, as could the situation for someone with Addison's.

I read once that the steroid that is in Florinef is released naturally by the body in the AM and some people have trouble sleeping if they take it at night.

Personally, if I take it without food eventually I start to get stomach pain. Not necessarily right after I take it, just some time during the day.

I take it at 7AM with a glass of milk, and then go back to bed. I take my second dose with lunch. Taking the first dose so early helps me when I finally crawl out of be a few hours later.

WEll I have given the Flornef a try in the AM- usually 1 or 2 hrs befor I get out of bed. It does seem to give me a bit of extra energy.. I have not been on it long enought to really no... it might just be a good 2 days! But I have gotten these weird stomach pains- kind of crampy and spasmy. Sometimes when I tkae my other meds I really notice it.... anyone have this??

jess,

i couldn't tolerate florinef because in a few days i gained A LOT of weight. i couldn't stay in bed during the night because i was in so much pain. i had to leave my bed and stand next to it to make the fluids go down and once i was in bed again it got to my bowel and head and again gave me terrible pain. so i got off it because even the littlest dose made me keep way too much fluids again.

so we are all very different you see, what goes for one of us can be very bad for another.

wish you best of luck trying to find to best dose and the best time to take it!
