Anya
Hi, I have suspected PoTS, I have an appointment in January to see a cardiologist to get a referral for a specialist at kings college hospital. Today and most of last night I have been having an almost constant pounding heart sensation. My pulse has been fluctuating between 77 and 123. Now that's pretty normal for when I stand up. But this has been happening whilst I've been sitting. I kept waking up last night feeling my heart pounding and I'm absolutely exhausted now. I've also now got an almost muscular ache in my chest as well as a stabbing pain in my left leg above my knee. Maybe im over thinking things but as I'm pretty new to PoTS and understanding it, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had these symptoms and what they do to relieve them. Thanks Anya
MomtoGiuliana
Have you been able to see a specialist yet? The sensation of heart pounding was a typical symptom for me, that was addressed somewhat with a low dose beta blocker for me. For me it tends to improve during the afternoon and early evening and with more fluid intake. I also experienced chest pains when my POTS was more severe. I get muscle cramps in my feet and legs. It can be caused by electrolytes being off a bit. I tend to have slightly low potassium when POTS flares up. Increasing potassium rich foods such as fruits, helped at times. I've been told I'll have to wait about a year to get the appointment for the specialist. The pounding sensation eased off for a bit this afternoon but it's back again. I'll admit I'm not very good at fluid intake as I also have a weak bladder. I've heard about electrolyte drinks helping some, but it's had to find Ines that aren't full of sugar. Thanks for the info
bombsh3ll
Are you in the UK Anya? If the wait to see a specialist is so long (I waited 3 years but most of that was fighting for the referral to someone who had heard of POTS), perhaps you could get a prescription for a beta blocker just to try in the meantime from your GP. They didn't work for me, but can be helpful for some, especially if the main symptom is pounding/racing heart rather than lightheadedness/syncope. I've been told that beta blockers aren't for me as I also have asthma. The pounding sensation when sitting is a new symptom. I'm 26 and I've had PoTS symptoms since I was about 15 after a bad bout of whooping cough. This was unusual an symptom for me, so thought I'd ask others if they had the same sensation. I was also tempted to go to a&e at the time but knowing how little is known about PoTS I couldn't be bothered waiting hours on end just to be told they didn't know what to do with me. Thanks for the suggestion though
RecipeForDisaster
As a side note, I have pretty bad asthma and it was still possible for me to try a specific beta blocker (there are a few) . I am doing fine on metoprolol, asthma-wise.
