Darlene
how does one go about finding a mutation to a certain gene?
Katybug
Do you mean how do you get genetic testing for a known gene mutation that causes a certain illness or do you mean something different?
Darlene
Katybug, yes. sorry, been having trouble finding words.
Katybug
Well, there's always 23&me which you order the kit online and follow the instructions. There's also another online company that sends a kit for a full read of your dna but I can't remember the name. If you want something really specific though, I would think the doctor needs to order it and tell you what method will be used for tissue collection (blood vs. Cheek swab). I recently had pharmacogenetic testing done by order of my geneticist. She actually has kits in her office. The doc and the patient fill out a form, the patient swabs their own cheek, and the patient fedex's (it's prepaid shipping) it for this testing. Do you see a geneticist for anything? Darlene
i thought 23 and me was about ancestry. no, i don't see a geneticist.
Katybug
No. 23&me is genetic testing. Each geneticist is different just like every other type of doctor so referrals and acceptance of Medicaid would be based on that specific doctor's office rules. Is there something specific you are trying to figure out if you have?
Darlene
23andMe provides ancestry-related genetic reports and raw genetic data. At this time they do not offer health-related genetic reports.
