tigerbomb
This might be a dumb question I'm still fairly new to POTS & gastroparesis, and I'm hoping that someone with a bit more experience might have some tips and tricks for staying hydrated when your stomach isn't emptying. I know that some people do IV saline, but is there anything less invasive?(I woke up feeling extra-symptomatic today. I've drank about 24 oz of fluids so far, and it's all just sitting in my stomach, making me look vaguely pregnant. Meanwhile, I'm still thirsty)
Kellysavedbygrace
not a dumb question at all. I have this same problem when I'm crashing. My hunch is when I'm crashing my sympathetic nervous system takes over, shuts down digestion and thats why I get silent reflux and cant eat or drink much. During these episodes I do try to get in as much salt as I can and try to have a massage or warm shower (while seated) to relax my system. My only consolation is getting a good night of rest- which is difficult to do when the adrenaline is on overdrive.I do get IV fluids which are my go to source when I can't get out of a crash. Almost always helps bail me out. (I get these about 1x a mo)
Batik
Please make sure you're getting salt with the fluids, otherwise you're at risk of water poisoning, which can be fatal. My friend's ex-partner, who had severe ME and almost certainly POTS, died of this at the age of 28 two months ago.I'm afraid I don't know about IVs and such, I'm still getting sent around specialists, but best of luck. looneymom
All I know to tell you is to make sure you are getting enough salt and water. Might try sipping on gatoraide to see if that would help.
tigerbomb
Thanks, all.Kelly, I think that makes a lot of sense. I get reflux along with the other symptoms too, but it doesn't feel like acid - just whatever I've been drinking (TMI?). It's interesting that you mention getting a good night's sleep - I was pleasantly surprised by how well I slept last night! I still was woken up by my usual 6 am gastrocalypse, but was able to fall back asleep afterwards. Usually I'm way too wired.
