Hello I Am New To This Forum, But Not New To Pots

Hi. I have been reading this forum for quite some time. I became I'll with some unknown virus in the summer of 2008...went to several doctors. Finally, in the summer of 2009, I went to Mayo in Scottsdale and was diagnosed with POTS. Interestingly, I was told to salt load, raise the head of my bed, NOT to exercise for six months, drink lots of fluids, and was put on SSRI-Zoloft. I did not see Dr. Goodman I believe he was in Rochester at this time. Anyways, I did recover...until I stopped the Zoloft...which the doc at Mayo told me to do. I relapsed in October of 2011. I have tried Zoloft, Lexapro, Pristiq...all to no avail. So now I finally have a request per my neurologist to get in with Dr. Goodman? Any idea how long the wait is to get in with him? Also does he require you to stop any of your meds before seeing him? Also I just started proponalol 10 mg twice a day...I believe this is helping but not for the whole day...just in short bits. They had talked about nadolol...because I get terrible headaches. Has anyone had experience with this? Sorry for all the questions..l m just excitd to talk to people who understand!!

Amelia, propranolol has a very short half life, about 4 hrs. That is most likely why it is only helping you for short periods. There is an extended release form or you could take it more frequently. Nadolol has a much longer half life and only has to be taken once a day. Keep in mind that for each person, however, one beta blocker may be more or less effective than another. The only way to know which is best for you is trial and error unfortunately.

Please make sure that you talk things over with your doctor before upping/lowering dosages of prescribed meds or taking meds more frequently. As Hyperpots says, we are all different and may react different so what goes for one doesn't necessarily need to go for anyone else as well. You could call dr Goodman's office and ask if he would want you on or off your meds when he sees you. My guess is he will talk to you first (while you are on your normal meds) and then will come up with a plan. Best of luck on your appointment, hope you'll find the answers you need!
