How Do You Know If You Are Having A Stroke Or Not

Recommended Posts

I have POTS, EDs, and high blood pressure and im 18. Sometimes (ecspecially tonight) my chest hurtsa more then usual I couldn't tell if i was more numb or not but i could like barely see and felt more loopy then usual.did it. My blood pressure was 148/90 and it said my heartbeat was irregul;ar for two times that I I could say the abc's straight though. But it was horrible and i wanted to go to the emergency room so i woke my mom up and it got to thew point where we were gonna go but she convinced me ive been before for simililar incident and they never helped. How do you know when it is a serious stroke OR TIA (which i thought it was) Do any of you guys have this problem?

Here's a link to the stroke association with some symptoms.

Other things you can test...raise both arms (they should lift to the same height), smile (should be symmetrical), walk (any loss of balance or weakness on one side) and talk (any slurred speech). These are a few things you could do to check for a stroke. Usually with a stroke (or TIA) at least one of these things will be abnormal on one side compared to the other or you'll have slurred speech or drooling or something along those lines.

TIAs usually have symptoms like a regular stroke but they resolve..usually within about 24 hours.

Sorry you're feeling so bad.

If you are unable to tell the difference you MUST get to the doctor.

You will learn how to tell the difference between different types of heart symptoms over time with this ANS stuff.

Most of the time we can endure and work through our symptoms. Severe or new symptoms will become times to go to the doctor. IF it is bad, you will be treated, if it is not going to damage you, you will learn how to live through and manage these new symptoms.

I agree with T. It takes time to "get used to" the craziness of your POTS (which may be different from another patient's experience). I also had episodes (when I first developed symptosm) where I was sure something catastrophic was happening (at least concerned enough to go to the ER to make sure I was ok). After many years I take flare ups in better stride. However, I think if you are ever unsure about what may be going on it is best to call your doctor immediately (if it is possible to reach the doctor). I have found that to be the best next step if I am unsure--usually just talking to the dr or his nurse (they are POTS specialists) helps me understand better what is going on and if it is something to be immediately concerned about.

Strokes are not something to fool around w tho so if you have question and can't get your doctor then it is best to proceed to the ER.
