Histamine

I sent some articles about histamine to our cardiologist. Excess Histimine can cause so many problems in the body. I have started my son on DAO to see if it will make a difference. My son does have problems with seasonal allergies but I have always had to keep him on Zertic and singular. In the the past when I thought it might be safe to take him off of these, he would get sick with a sinus or ear infection. He has very few outdoor allergies. My son has been tested for food allergies but has none. However, He eats very healthy foods that are high in histamines or will help release for histamines into the body. Sometimes he will break out in rashes after he has ate about 30 minutes later. However, foods also contain sufites and there is a possibility this could be causing a problem because of his +/- CBS mutation. Sulfites can cause allergic reactions in the body. My son does have high levels of histamine and glutamate levels on his neurotransmitters test. Histamine is also associated with MCAS. Here are some articles about DAO and how histamine can affect the body.

Hi Rachel,

I just want to make sure you know that if Tyler is having a mast cell activation syndrome reaction to foods, it would not show up in allergy testing. The allergy tests check for IgE mediated sensitivity to allergens. A mast cell reaction can still occur in mcas patients that don't test positive for classic IgE allergy.

A lot of people with mcas do the zyrtec and zantac combination. You could bring that up to the doctors? I just read your post about mthfr defect which I think is helpful, I have that too. I got my tryptase levels checked but they are normal but the doctor said next time I have a reaction that I need to get them checked then. Also, my IGE is elevated. I think a lot of my symptoms are due to an allergy but am having trouble finding what. Also, I am having a lot of GI symptoms which is the most debilitating right now. Some things which I feel are helping me..

- taking D3 vitamin drops (instead of pills) I would recommend this to anyone who has a vitamin d deficiency. I switched from prescription pills to drops and my level is finally starting to rise. I think our guts does not absorb d well.

- stomach acid reducers.. right now I am on protonix and zantac but I am still having trouble here.

- after meals taking choice organic easy digest tea- it contains Organic Ginger Root, Organic Licorice Root, Organic Lemongrass Leaf, Organic Turmeric Root. I think this has made a difference and some of those are histamine reducers.

- taking a methyfolate supplement, I am only taking one with 2.5 mg. You have to be careful not to take too much because that can cause symptoms too.

Again, these are just what I am doing and thought I would throw it out there for anyone who might find it helpful. I would consult your doctor and ask them about trying these things.

Thanku Rachel, going to look over this. Is it worthwhile getting histamine and tryptase levels checked?

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for posting these fascinating articles. I learned a lot of things I did not know. What an enormous amount of material to digest. Keep us posted on how Tyler does on DAO. Rather then sacrificing healthy unfortunately high histamine foods it's certainly worth trying this approach. I guess repeating histamine lab values will reveal how effective taking DAO is for Tyler. I hope it proves an effective approach.

I have asked about this at Tyler's last appointment. It's on hold right now since he has the flu. If you can find a doctor that has an interest in MCAS, they might be willing to run these test. MCAS is new to many doctors and they may not know what testing needs to be ran.

I'm really sorry to hear that Tyler has the flu on top of everything else. How awful. I probably missed it in one of your other posts but has Tyler been evaluated for MCAD ?
