Tachycardia Even While Resting?

Hello!

I'm still new to this site. I've only posted once before and I'm currently in the process of getting a diagnosis. All the symptoms that I have point to a fairly mild version of POTS.

I have an appointment with Dr. Yan-Go in UCLA on Tuesday but since I live in Idaho and will have to make such a long trip, Dr. Yan-Go reveiwed my files ahead of time and said if I got a TTT before I went she could probably take care of me in one appointment. Anyhow, I managed to get a doctor here in Idaho to do a TTT for me. He's one of only a few who can do that here. This doctor said that he wasn't really sure if it was POTS or not since my resting heart rate was so high to begin with. It is 100bpm while I am resting. Within a few minutes of being raised on the TT it went to 130bpm. I was thinking that was definitely POTS because of the increase in heart rate was at least 30bpm. I didn't think it really mattered that my resting heart rate was already high. This doctor has only seen 1 other case of POTS in his career so he is not and doesn't claim to be a specialist.

So my question (finally!) is whether or not those of you with POTS have a high resting heart rate or if your resting heart rate is "normal". Any thoughts? I guess I should just be patient and wait to see Dr. Yan-Go but I'm curious.

I also want to thank all of you for posting! Your advice has been invaluable to me.

Hoping to feel better real soon!

Hi, welcome to the board.

Is your resting heart rate of 100 whilst lying down after a rest? (that is how to get a proper resting heart rate). My lying down heart rates can be as low as 55, whilst asleep I apparently go as slow as 35/min (found on 24hr ECG monitoring). When sitting still I can have rates anywhere from 60-120 depending on how I am feeling. Generally if I am having a tough day my heart rates will be faster.

Flop

Welcome! Good luck as you start to unravel the mystery.

When you say resting, do you mean with or without compression?

For me, on an "average" day, without compression, laying down is can go from 38-65. Sitting 60-95 and standing can be anywhere from 90-165, or higher if I am starting to flare. (I have had higher when standing still or in relapse mode) I just do not go without compression!

best regards,

hi katti -

welcome to the site. to echo the party line, sorry you have reason to be here, but seeing that you do, glad you found us! and as a completely unrelated aside, i like your name. just out of curiousity, is it said "katie" or with a soft "a"?

back to the matter at hand, it's definitely possible to have a high resting HR & still have a POTS diagnosis. BUT - and this is a big BUT - as others have mentioned already, i'd wonder if your "resting" HR was in fact actually a true resting HR. that means lying down for a decent amount of time, no talking, not much moving, etc. your true resting rate may not be as high as it appeared to be. but, either way, your TTT does seem to point you in the direction of POTS.

good luck with your upcoming appointment. sorry that you have to travel but know that you're not the only one! and it's great that the doc you'll be seeing seems to be sensitive to limiting your travels/ appointments. it's understandible that you're eager to get some answers NOW but tuesday will be here before you know it where you'll - hopefully - have a good appointment with someone who is more informed that the doc who did your initial testing.

hope this helps,

:) melissa

Sometimes my resting hr is high, 90-100. This is especially true if I am sitting, but lately even my true resting hr (lying down) has been higher than normal (never used to get above 50, now it's usually 75 or 80). I'm not sure why it's changed for me, but you can def. have POTS with a high resting hr.

welcome!
