  1. I know I rave about Magnesium all of the time . I started taking it due to an off-hand remark that my allergist (from Mayo) made. He was commenting that I needed to better treat my autonomic stuff. I shared my frustration and asked WHAT was left to try. He said, "Magnesium is being used with amazing results." First I had ever heard of it. Since then, I have been using 500mg of magnesium oxide every night. If you've never used it before, beware. It is a fabulous sleep aid. Only take it in the PM, right before you are ready to sleep. Used over time, my body has adapted, somewhat, but it still totally relaxes me. If you need help with a slow GI tract- That's also one of the side effects. Most importantly, it has somewhat normalized by wide HR swings with posture changes and wide BP swings. My overall HR is considerably slower with magnesium and my overall BP is less labile. In the winter, I used to be so affected by the cold weather, that my whole body vasoconstricted. My extremities would turn dark purple/black, my BP would rise, I would even get chest pain. On magnesium, THAT isn't happening. Now, I read that it also helps in preventing migraines! Looking back, mine have been better and less frequent. I have trouble tolerating so many meds that it is wonderful to find a natural mineral that has so many benefits. Methods: In a case control study performed between January 2007 and December 2007 at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran, 140 migraine patients were enrolled and their level of serum magnesium was determined and the results were compared with 140 healthy people who did not have any headache, kidney, or gastrointestinal disorders, and no consumption of magnesium complements. Results: Migraine patients (22 male, 118 female) with a mean age of 33.82+/-10.31 and 140 healthy people (26 male, 114 female) with a mean age of (34.19+/-9.95) were enrolled. Forty patients had aura and 100 patients did not have aura. The average serum magnesium level in the patient group (26.14+/-4.3) was significantly lower than the control (31.09+/-4.32) group (p=0.000). There was no significant difference between the mean level of serum magnesium in patients with migraine with aura and without aura, however, there was a significant linear relationship between the amount of serum magnesium and the frequency of headache. Conclusions: Serum magnesium in migraine patients was significantly lower than the normal population and related to the frequency of migraine attacks, supporting the use of magnesium in prevention and treatment of migraine.
  2. Hello everyone, I have been soooo frustrated lately by my inability to get to sleep at a reasonable hour despite how tired I am! I've recently read about delayed sleep onset, which is where you get tired at a normal bedtime (around 10 p.m.) but can't sleep until well after midnight, and that describes me exactly! Once I fall asleep (usually between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.) I'm dead to the world until almost noon unless I have to get up before then. (Of course as everyone on this board knows, that's much easier said than done for us). It's just frustrating that I feel like total crap in the morning and afternoon when everyone else in the world is functioning, then I get my "energy" around midnight when everyone else is asleep! Maybe I should make friends with some people in India or China so that I have someone to hang out with, LOL. Like last night I was tired around 8-9 p.m. and almost wanted to go to bed that early, but then I went to bed at 10:30 and laid there with my heart and mind racing for more than four hours (though I got up on and off). Just to clarify, I have this problem no matter what time I wake up, not just when I sleep in late. Obviously that contributes to my difficulty working when I'm tired and dizzy all the time anyway and then can't even get to sleep. I searched the forum and found some really old threads that mentioned people with sleep difficulty taking melatonin and that helping. Has anyone here tried that or found other solutions to a problem like this? Also, have you done actual sleep studies or can a PCP just write a script for this? Sorry for the long post, but I know so many of us here have enormous difficulty in the morning, so I wondered if a lot of us also share the trouble of delayed sleep onset.
  3. I have been having greater difficulty with sleep in the past couple of weeks. I have a lot of sleep starts in the beginning of the night. Usually there will be one big one at first, and then lots of little ones after that. Sometimes the little ones are so little that I'm not even sure if they are sleep starts or not. For example, I will wake up because one of my fingers is moving, and the movement against my skin wakes me up. Since it happens right after I fall asleep, I'm not sure if it is totally involuntary or not. When it is worse it is more than just one finger that moves; it is my whole hand, and sometimes even my arm. Maybe this would fall under the category of Periodic Limb Movement Disorder. When a finger moves and wakes me up, I make a fist to try to keep my fingers still when I fall asleep again. If the movements aren't too bad, then this will work. Sometimes I have to put my fists underneath the weight of my body to keep them from moving in my sleep. When the movements are at their worst, even lying on my arms and fists doesn't work. They move anyway after I fall asleep, and it wakes me up. I haven't had any changes in diet or medicines, so I don't know why my sleep has changed and why my body is moving so much in my sleep. This is a problem I have had for a few years, but it has never occurred nightly for 2 weeks. A few nights ago I was really in need of a good nights sleep, so I changed up my night time meds a bit. Instead of taking 30mg of amitriptyline and 3mg of Melatonin, I took 1/2 of a doxylamine succinate (Unisom) instead. My hope was that it would relax my body enough so that I could sleep, and it did seem to help I have continued with this for 3 nights now, and I have been sleeping better. I don't prefer this for the long term, though. I would like to go back on the amitriptyline for migraine prevention, but it is best to not mix it with the doxylamine succinate. Does anyone else have a problem with sleep starts and other involuntary muscle movements in your sleep, and is there anything that has helped you with this?
  4. Here is a strange one and I hope this is the right place for it as it concerns medication so I didnt want to post in the chit chat forum, or at least I think it concerns medication!!... I have been having, super, really and I mean really very detailed in depth dreams... I have always been a light sleeper but would always have had some dreams but never to the level of detail and intricacy that I am having them now on a nightly basis. I noticed that once the side effects of all the meds I was on subsided I started having these really vivid, full colour, linear dreams like they would follow a story for what seemed way longer than a usual dream!! I have also managed to have a few lucid dreams where I can control whats going on in the dream, be any character I want and change my surroundings or superhuman talents at will. Sometimes they can be so vivid that I question weather I am dreaming or awake! There are feelings, emotions, tastes, smell, I even feel vivid pain at times... its odd, its kinda cool and an awesome way to have an adventure for free but I have never had them like this before, I am wondering if any of you are the same? Sometimes my dreams can be so active that I can jerk, mumble and moan while my sleaping depending on whats hapening in the dream, my husband has had to comfort me at times or tells me when I wake that I was jumpy or calling out in relation to the dream I was having, this can make me waaayyy more tired than usual when I wake as I have had a very active night!!
