HI! This is a weird question, but its a problem I have and wonder if anyone else does too. My brother laughs at me for saying this, but does anyone feel like they have a small throat? I get the tiniest things stuck in my throat and choke, then I either puke or hiccup. I have to be concious of chewing my food up very well, like baby food, I have even felt like I got a little florinef tablet caugt before and have to drink a glass of water to get it down

Am I the only one?

I am forever getting medications, food and sometimes even thick liquids stuck in my throat. It sometimes feels like there is a lump at the base of my throat and then there is the intense burning in my chest when whatever is stuck begins to break down. I have gastroparesis as a result of nerve damage from autonomic neuropathy so my GI doc thinks that the nerves in my esophagus are now being effected...I am having an esophageal manometry test done on Wed. to determine if it is in fact a motility problem causing the difficulty.

Do you have any motility problems? I would suggest you mention the dysphasia to your PCP and see if you can get some answers. Good luck!

Poor swallowing is called dysphagia.

Dysphasia is loss of or deficiency in the power to use or understand language as a result of injury to or disease of the brain. If you use the wrong word, the doctors will get confused.

Sorry for the confusion, that is a word my doc has used with me so I thought it meant the same thing, now I am going to have to ask him for clarification! ;)

What's gastroparesis? What's motility? I don't know what they are but I have horrib IBS

is the dysphagia something you really need help with or just a nuscience?

Well I have never thought I had a small throat, but I certainly have a swallowing problem, especially pills and I do burp and get the hic-cups and then the heartburn.I had a barium swallow 2 wks. ago it was normal. I am having an endosocopy Fri. I don't think that will show any the these kinds of problems, but they want me to have it for Gerd symptoms. Does anyone know if dysphagia Is related to POTS and how is it detected?

Madeline,I would certainly talk to your talk about this problem,I find it to be more than a nuisance, Pat

I think I have a small esophagus also.

I have chocked on things and had to have someone hit my back or hold me upside down a number of times when I was a kid. (this was before the Heimlich was invented).

I have to take small bites and chew really well. Even then I have had stuff stick.

I had a small pill stick one time and the doctor told me he thought it could be a spasm that caused it to stick, then it swelled from the moisture and was really stuck.

I don't know if it is related to POTS at all.

gastroparesis..is slow motility or none at all of the tummmy. There is a term also for the feeling of the lump in the throat. I posted quite a bit on this in the past. I have not been aon in a while though. I too have throat and esophageal problems probrably due to the fact that there are alot of nerves that line these areas. I also get a numb tongue and nasal area. I am finding out while this is rare it can be part of POTS. As some other patients have had these strange symptoms. Having a GI study done is a good thing..

Good luck dear it is a bothersome symptom. Hope they get to the bottom of it for u:)
