1st Time Took Sick Leave Due To Pots

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I guess I am writing this for support, although I know many of you face a great deal more challenge than I do right now.

I woke up this AM and was super dizzy when I sat up, and even more dizzy and nauseated when I stood. I thought it might pass, but after an hour it didn't. So I stayed home. Fortunately I have a specialist and his nurse is responsive. I called and she just recommended salt and fluid loading, and going to get rehydrated via IV if that didn't work. When symptoms like this come on suddenly it is scary, even when you've had them before...my mind starts racing through all the possibilities/explanations.

I feel a little better now, so I think fluid and salt loading was the answer, although I am still wondering why these symptoms appeared so suddenly. Maybe I will have to re-start meds.

Thanks for "listening" and I am glad we can be here for each other. It is reassuring to be able to go to a place where people understand.

Hi.

I get that when my inner ears are having a problem. Look up bppv on google. It is common for those of us with autonomic problems. I have a physical therapist that does the treatments. It is unreal after she does a treatment, the nausea goes away immediately as does the dizziness. The hardest part is sitting up to sleep for 2 nights after the treatment.

Thinking of you

Katherine,

Just chiming in to offer you a little support. You always maintain such perspective on this illness and how it affects each one of us so differently...that always amazes me. So, no need to apologize for your need for support...it's usually YOU supporting all of us. It's our turn to support you! ;)

My first though was have you had any bugs or colds or anything in the past three years??? B/c if not, perhaps this is your first sign of a bug or cold coming on? Nonetheless, a day home from work and fluid and salt load are the best you can do for you body right now.

I can imagine how your mind would wander, especially when you have been so stable. I know it is so easy for you to remember how you felt when G was born and how that was, so I can imagine it is hard to stay in the moment and not freak out that this will last!

It' so easy to say 'Oh no, here we go again....'!!!!!

Hopefully, you'll have a day home from work, with your extra salt and fluids and begin to recuperate with no lasting effects. I know you've had a few spells every once in a while, like at a party when you got really tachy, etc. so hopefully this is similar to that, just a little extra yucky today.

Thinking of you...and please keep us posted!

Emily

Katherine, I always feel guilty when I use my sick or leave time for my ANS or EDS stuff... I know it doesn't make logical sense that I should feel "better" about having the flu than I do about dislocating something or just having a dizzy day where I know I shouldn't try to drive, but I do.

Hang in there as best you can and know that many people here are thinking good thoughts for you that the IV and salt loading bolster you enough. Personally, wearing support hose make a world of difference for me also, but we're all different.

Thanks everyone. Dawn, I do wonder if it could be inner ear. I am pretty dizzy still, especially when I turn my head, and it came on so suddenly. I don't have other POTS symptoms except a little nausea that goes along with the dizzy sensation.

I did really improve and actually went to work for a little bit. Nina I hear you--I am the same way (feeling guilty). Doesn't make sense!

I really appreciate everyone's input and good thoughts. It helped me today :)

Katherine,

I'm glad you stayed home and rested and took care of yourself. I know that sudden feeling like "Whoah- where is this coming from?!" For me it's usually a virus/flu of some sort that exacerbates my usual symptoms.

If you're dizzy, I agree with the inner-ear thing. Might be some kind of infection, I would see your GP to check that out. To me, "dizzy" is much different than "lightheaded" which is what I always am. If you're dizzy when moving your head side to side... yep... check about an ear infection...

I hope you're feeling better now, take it easy, drink lots and keep upping the salt, and don't feel guilty for taking sick leave!!! :)

Katherine,

I had an inner ear disturbance about five years ago, pre-POTS. It sounds a lot like what you're feeling. I would be standing up and all of a sudden, it felt like I had done like five flips or spins, and then was stopped suddenly. This would start and end in a matter of a second or two -- it was so odd. It took almost a month to get rid of it and I have no idea what caused it or made it better.

I was playing in a volleyball league at the time and I was the setter, and would be running all over the court and having to turn back and forth a lot. I ended up having to sit out the second half of most games because I felt motion-sick after a while! Of course, now what I would give to be able to play a half a game ...

Hope you make a complete recovery quickly!

Katherine,

I just wanted to say I'm thinking about you----and don't feel guilty for taking time off. You need to listen to your body----and you just did the right thing by doing that. Hashemoto's is a funny thing too-----that can mess with your POTS. Have you had your numbers checked lately for that?

Otherwise---just try to be kind to yourself, and don't worry to much.

Sending a big hug......

Maxine----------(aka----Ju Ju-----by step grand daughter--- :) )

Again, thanks everyone for thinking of me and responding to my message :)

I am still better today. I feel off balance still, but not dysfunctional. I am really thinking it must be inner ear, and maybe not really POTS at all? Amy, today it is exactly like you describe--for a few seconds I will have this flipping. falling, movement sensation and then I get back my equilibrium for the most part.

I am still keeping up the salt and fluids and trying not to push myself too much!

I hope you all have a good weekend.

katherine -

so glad that you're feeling a bit better & hope that you're back to your best soon. hopefully you'll have a bit of down time over the weekend? i had an inner ear infection once and i would agree that perhaps that's what was actually going on with you....it sounds similar. if that's the case the bad news is that it's NO fun at all; the good news is that it goes away within a few days leaving nothing but the memory of it behind.

i can empathize with the work thing tough...when i was still able to work i had SUCH a hard time calling in even though looking back cannot imagine how i managed at times. and like nina, for whatever reason if i had the flu i would have felt different about it than when it was b/c i wasn't safe to drive and couldn't stand up without blacking out.

hang in there,

:) melissa

katherine,

i am sorry to be late but wanted to let you know that i can so understand your fear of having a set back!

and why do we all feel/felt so bad when having to take sick leave due to pots???? i really really hate that (although i was the same: taking my own days off while actually i should have taken sick leave).

i am glad that you're feeling a bit beter now but maybe you should see a doctor for this (possible) inner ear stuff???

warm wishes,

corina :)
