I Want To Go To Mayo

I would like to go to mayo since I feel I am getting worse. Started getting sick 6 mo ago. Got progressively worse and last month I was in the hospital, had a TTT and diagnosed with POTS.

I would like to see a specialist and want to go to the best. How do I go about this, what's the procedure?

Oh, forgot to mention I have crappy HMO for insurance and can't switch until Nov.

How long does it take to get an appointment and how many days for testing, will they want to do retesting?

My neurologis here ***** and am being treated for pots by my local doc. I think I am his first patient with pots and I feel like an experiment.

i can tell you from our recent experience trying to get in w/either low or sandroni. mayo requires your pcp to call first and then they need to see you records to see if you "qualify" for them to see you. they say it is easier to get in w/sandroni than low. i take care of all of my wife's appts., treatment research, etc. she feels like crap pretty much all of the time, as you well feel, therefore she doesn't have the energy to go through this. you probably have a better chance getting an appt. w/dr. grubb. we have one set for march '07. we're going to the cleveland clinic next week.

Same with me. My neurologist wrote Dr. Low and that is how I got in. Its important that your PCP documents your case very carefully and thoroughly. Request your records first. Then, if they are not clear enough, have your doc write a letter directly to whomever you would like to see. If you call Neurology, they will tell you an address to send your records. You can stuff them in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Box for $8.00 and they are there in 2 days. They will review your records, like the previous post. I super-organized mine so they could flip through (tabs, table of contents, chronology, list of meds, list of meds tried and why they failed etc.) Then you wait. Seriously, you might consider your choices with your insurance. Mayo will balance bill you for anything your insurance does not cover and they rarely (ever?) write anything off. Expect that. I can tell you the amounts that they charge in both Scottsdale and Rochester if you want. Just send me a note.

Good Luck!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just don't give up hope. I sent my records in to the Neurology dept. at Mayo back at the beginning of July. Mid August I recieved a letter stating that "they are not able to grant me an appointment at this time". They must have however, forwarded my information to the dept. of Endocrinology (I have some major endocrine problems), and I got a letter this weekend telling me I have an appt. in Rochester on Sept 20!!!!

I live in Ft. Myers, FL, and now I have to be in Minnesota in 2 weeks! No, I'm not complaining, it just seems so odd that after trying so hard to get in, get a denial, and now an appt., just seems unreal.

I have an appt. in Endocrinology first, and then go for the TTT, with an appt. with Dr. Fealey the following day. I would also like to ask the group:

HOW MANY DAYS OF TESTING DID YOU HAVE AT MAYO??

Good luck, and remember, never give up hope. Things happen sometimes when we least expect it.

I had alot of cardio time. They were very helpful. I was there for 2 weeks. Had a major snow srorm that closed everything down. At least you will be there when the weather is absolutely beautiful !!!!!!!!

Good luck....I wrote along with my huband a list of questions and issues and went through it with the different docs at the final appt. They see you have tests done and then go over results and give info. Also the fellows that you will see first ARE really the best of the best. Good luck... Miriam
