Request For Good Thoughts

Hi Everyone. I am asking for good thoughts (or prayers if you're so inclined) on behalf of my first stepfather, whose name is Pat. He called me last night to let me know he has third recurrence of malignant melanoma--this time it's in his liver. We are awaiting information on whether it's metastisized elsewhere; and also what the plan will be.

He's only in his 50's--and the first battle was in 1991, with a melanoma on his retina. He lost his left eye to that fight...then 5 years ago, he had a recurrence in his lung. They removed a large portion of one lung... and now it's recurred in his liver.

He's already outlived all those patients for which there is available data on "occular melanoma"... and this time I'm worried because he's stated how tired he is of fighting. I'm hoping that will pass when we get out of this period of unknown--not knowing what the plan will be or what, exactly he is fighting right now.

Mighty Mouse, He certainly has my sympathy and prayers! When they are considering treatment for his liver tumor, he might want to read about the Sir Spheres made by Sirtex. Just do a search on Sirtex and read about their spheres. They are a new treatment for tumors in the liver. I believe it may have actually been used once on a liver tumor that is melonoma.

I appreciate all the thoughts on Pat's behalf. I know he's getting amazing care--he's being seen at Sloane Kettering in NYC, and also has a liver cancer specialist at Memorial. Lastly, there's a consulting melanoma specialist from Mayo, who originally provided the final diagnosis in 1991. His docs in NY had sent him to Wills Eye here in Philly only one day after he presented himself to them with some vision loss.

I feel badly for his youngest child, Alice, as she's in high school and all her siblings have long since moved away from home. She's shy and quiet...and I hope she has some friends to talk to...

Pat was with my mom through almost all of my childhood, and is the person I think of most when thinking happy memories of my childhood. He's one of those people who just has a gift when it comes to parenting... in many ways, I consider him more my "dad" than the one I was born to. He's an amazing person and I hope he can find it in him to continue winning his battle against melanoma.

Jan, I probably should clarify that melanoma in the liver isn't treated the same way as other cancers of the liver. The primary cancer started out as an intraoccular melanoma, the metastasized to melanoma of the lung, and now melanoma of the liver. From the reading I've done, it's a different beast than other types of cancer and treatments are mostly in the form of clinical trials through NIH and other places b/c it's relatively rare.
