POTS symptom? or something else?

I had a very strange thing happen this morning. I had decided that after I drove my son to school this morning I was going to go back to bed and get some much needed sleep. I had had a very busy week and my kids all had doctor and dentist appointments for what seemed every day, and I had really overdone it and I was really paying for it. A little after I layed down I was feeling very light headed and had that creepy feeling that I was moving but I wasn't. I hate this feeling, usually it makes me feel car sick and it ruins any sleep I might have had. I think I fell asleep though. Well I am not sure I was dreaming or was slightly awake, but I had the feeling all the sudden that I was falling. It happenedd real fast and the next second just about I had a funny feeling in my head, almost electrical? At exactly the same time I felt like I couldn't move, kinda frozen. As soon as it started it stopped and left me scared and feeling strange. I don't know what happened to me. I did get back to sleep, I think only because my older daughter was home and crawled into bed with me and hugged me. I was so glad she was home. I don't know if it really happened or I dreamed it. It felt so real. I think my eyes were opened when it happened? I've had so many goofy things happen to me lately I feel stupid asking her cuz she probably has me labeled a hypochondriac. She gave me a hard time when I asked to have my electrlytes check this week, she finally gave in and called the lab with a script, but told me next time ask my cadio to do! Why do they treat patients like this, is it so hard to be nice and have feelings. I'd appreciate if anyone has ever had anything happen to them like this tell me cuz It's got me really uptight and scared. What could it be, can it be my BP dropped while sleeping? Mine has been a little off since starting florinef a few weeks ago. I have even got up first thing in am with it high 138/89 pulse 91. Before florinef I'd wake up with it really low 90/58ulse 71 or lower.

Any Insight?

Kim

Weird things like this happen to me all the time. I never have a nice, peaceful sleep pattern anymore. It sounds like your sympathetic nervous system was irritated and interfering with your "alseep" state. I do all kinds of strange things during the night. I have finally realized that my asleep state and awake state are clashing throughout my sleep patterns. Hopefully, this will pass for you and get better in time. You are not alone. Hope this helps.

take care,

Sounds like you may have had an episode of what they call sleep paralysis. Anything new of course you should have checked by your dr. If it was sleep paralysis it's actually quite common and nothing to be afraid of although it can be very scary when you experience it!!

If it continues to happen or lasts more than 10-15 minutes then you may want to talk to a neurologist about getting a sleep study done.

I get this kind of thing a lot and it's usually when I've overexerted myself (but not always); it's almost like my body is having trouble deciding if it's going to stay ultra alert or freeze up on me.

Kim,

I have woken up also before like I was falling, When I realize I am wake up, I have also noticed that my heart is racing, and most of the time my bp is low. I am not sure about you, but I only sleep about 2-3 hours at a time, I also wake up due to heart rate chances, like when I am having PCV's also.

Hopfully, things will get better for you , and you also get some much need rest, as it sounds like you had a long week.

Hi, I have had the same types of symptoms, but I always thought I was just having a nightmare...Speaking of nightmares, does anyone here get alot of them?? I have been okay for the past few weeks, but then there are days where I will have nightmares for a few nights in a row. I don't watch scary movies...never liked them.

I do get the sensation that I am moving while I am sitting down though. I also get staring spells sometimes too.

Thank you so much everyone, I thought I was going crazy. I went to a few sites that were about sleep paralysis and it sounds exactly like what I experienced. You are all such a blessing. I did really overdo it this week. My son has been down in the dumps thinking he had ADD, and this week he had a followup appointment with the psychologist and she doesn't think he has ADD but a sleeping problem. I have been trying to have some quality time with him and kinda went overboard this week doing all the things he likes. Yesterday I was just plain totally wiped out, my tank was on empty. I want to do all the things a good parent should do but sometimes I'm just not able cuz I'm just to wiped out.

Thanks Again

Kim

Kim, Hi! Many strange & alarming symptoms disturb my sleep. I also, frequently nap during the day, even if I slept during the night, because my sleep is so disturbed. It is hard with are many symptoms and lack of awareness of our condition for some doctors to not treat us like hypochondriacs...this is frustrating! It is definately a struggle to not overdo it when you feel the need to be a "good parent". And I know the frustration of not being able to always do those things with your children that you want to when you want. My children have been extremely understanding and supportive, but I know it has been an adjustment for them. Their are, however, many lessons our children come to learn that are positive that they would not have learned, if not for having a sick parent. So I try to give them my best when I am at my best (and yes overdo it...paying a price). I also try to remember that I may not be able to be like I used to be, but can use this as a situation to teach my children many valuable lessons. Remember, you are a good parent regardless. I hope you find some answers to your latest symptoms! Take Care, Renee

Hi Renee!

One reason I don't nap during the day and I am so tired is that when I nap I seem to always have bad dreams, some really scarry ones at that! I have been sleeping in all weekend and my husband noticed I have acted rested. I really do feel a little better when I get extra sleep. My children are 17 and 19, and they have been really sweet when I don't feel good. They both have their temps and are always willing to do the driving if they can cuz I feel dizzy alot. I can't emagine how parents of really little ones are managing. Thanks and Take Care

Kim

Jacquie,

I am one of those that dream for what seems all night. And when they are scary there really bad. I can't watch scary movies either, they upset me way to much, they can even cause me to feel my symptoms worsen, especially adrenilin feelings. Sometimes I wonder if some of my meds cause them? Who knows. They say if you dream alot your not getting good sleep. I hope all your dreams are good ones! Take Care

Hi All,

I think that the sensation of falling (which normally wakes you up), and sleep paralysis are fairly common - not just for people with POTS, but everyone in general - most people I know have these sensations - I too have them.

I don't know if it is 'normal', since most people now days take some form of medication for something, i.e. antidepresants, calmatives, blood pressure medication, anti-inflammatorys etc. I know from experience that many medications can interfere with sleep, and cause unusual dreams.

I find both the sleep paralysis and the falling sensation quite scary, as I am sure most people would.

It maybe worth mentioning it to your doctor next time you see him/her.

All the best.
