Hi Traci ...sorry its been a while since I saw your post but I have been on holiday . Sorry to read that you had to be hospitalised . Hope you are doing better. I think seeing Dr Stewart would be a good first line of action as he is right on your doorstep. He has a background in Autonomic research and treatment but has now had a change of career and is just a normal neurologist. He wouldnt do any autonomic testing but he would be able to give you a diagnosis and follow up treatment. I have only met with him once so far so am not too familiar with him ..I see him again on wednesday 31st so will be anle to firm up my initial impressions. Should you want a full range of autonomic testing you couldnt do better than Dr Schondorf in montreal...He is Canadas number one expert in POTS and I was very impressed with his testing and his advice. I was able to get BC medical plan to pay for all the tests done in Montreal.

My E mail is dwman@ telus.net should you want either Docs address or phone number.

Hope this helps

Margaret

Hi girls! Just wanted to say hello to you two... I'm in Alberta and have had a similar experience to you Traci. That's great that you have a doctor with a background in the autonomic system available so close to you. I hope he turns out to be a good resource for you both. I would be interested to hear how things go for you guys... ;) Laura

Hi Margaret,

Are you aware of the Quebec Health Insurance is accepted in B.C.?

Do you know if B.C. hospitals accept Quebec patients?

Is there a law in B.C. that says that hospitals don't have to accept out of province patients?

Thanks for your help

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

As far as I understand BC has reciprocal agreements with all provinces except Quebec, however I had no problem getting treatment in Montreal..I`m pretty sure your health care would be accepted anywhere in Canada. No one would be handing you any bills to pay! Its going out of country for care that presents problems .I continue to be refused reimbursment for Dr Mathias on the grounds that I could get similar care SOMEWHERE in Canada.

Did you get another appointment with Dr Grubb? I was so happy and excited for you and really felt your disappointment.I manage as best I can treating myself with the support of my family Doc who recognises I know more than she does but it is nice to be able to discuss things with a knowlegable autonomic doc..we will see how it goes with Dr Stewart this next week.

Hi Margaret,

I have called the Vancouver Hospital last week and they told me they don't accept out of province patients. They said I have to reside in B.C.. I found it kind of strange because I think that it is an international law that you have to give medical treatment to anyone that is sick. The only problem is that the province does not pay the whole bill.

Do you know where I could call in B.C. to check if the hospital can refuse to give me an appointment?

I saw Dr Stewart 2 years ago. I think he moved to B.C. last year. Could you keep me posted on if he still takes care of POTS patients because I know someone in B.C. who is looking for a specialist?

Thanks

Ernie

Ernie,

I think any hospital will accept anyone as emergency care . I`m just off to vancouver so will contact you later in the week with an address and phone number for BC medical plan out of province dept. I will sound out Dr Stewart re seeing other Pots patients he sees both myself and my daughter so i presume he would see others....

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi Margaret,

I just came across this post. How did your appointment on Aug 31 with Dr. Stewart go? I have an appointment with him on the 21st of September, next week.

I've got my fingers crossed that he can help me. If he can I certainly wouldn't have to leave the country then, which I don't want to do, nor do I even feel well enough to do.

At this point I feel a little desperate. My symptoms keep getting worse.

Thanks for your reply

Hi again Traci

Sorry to read that you are having a hard time of it recently. I did see Dr Stewart again and was quite satisfied with his care.I am sure you will like him and I`m happy to hear you are seeing him so soon.

He did suggest a second opinion ,especially for my daughter, and so has referred us both to a Dr Rangno . I must admit I`m not too keen to see yet another Doc . I have seen some of the best and have never heard of this particular doc.Was this the autonomic specialist you have already seen ? Hope not as your report didnt sound right at all!

Actually Dr Rangno called me today to offer an appointment in early october so if this was the doc you saw I would really appreciate your comments as I have to decide pretty quickly if I will go or not!

Do keep in touch and I would be so interested to hear how it goes with Dr Stewart

Cheers, Margaret
