Very unpleasant "surge" feeling when lying down.

I haven't had this symptom happen as much lately (had a while where it was happening every night, in the past) but had a really bad episode last night.

I was moving house over the past couple of days, and I ensured I didn't do any heavy lifting, because that makes my symptoms a lot worse. But I am still very exhausted, and the exertion must have contributed to it.

Basically, I woke up in the early hours of the morning, with this very strong surge feeling. Oddly, my heart wasn't racing like it usually does, but it was beating very strong against my chest.

The "surge" feeling was almost unbearable. Very uncomfortable. It only went away when I sat upright, which is odd, and I have noticed happen a few times. Lying down seems to make it worse, or I have to sit up to "reset" my body,  and then I can feel it slowly come down. It took just under 10 minutes for it to go away.

I am guessing my BP was sky high, causing that feeling.

Does anyone else have this?

I'm finally see a specialist in ANS disorders in less than a month, so... hopefully some answers.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

I’ve been having surges all this week and can’t seem to shake them. Usually lying down or taking the day off helps a little bit for me with the “resetting”, but it isn’t this time. Heart rate is constantly high, BP is all over the place, I’ve had a headache for about two weeks now...

Do you maybe need to rest a little extra due to the move? I know you said you didn’t lift anything heavy but it sounds like your body is exhausted!

Take it easy. I hope you find some relief.

I know the feeling of the heart beating very strong but not necessariiy fast. I was told this can be from dehydration, low BP or high BP. Is it accompanied by chest pain? I also get this at night frequently but I got so used to it it does not scare me any longer. I just get up, get a drink and go back to bed. Often it fades after that.

I have issues similar lately in the evenings. I will be laying on my couch playing a video game and my heart with thump loudly. It is kind of an uncomfortable sensation. I will get up and move around. Such as grab something from the kitchen or go to the bathroom and lay back down. It will settle down for a bit then start back up. It is weird but I assume it is just adrenaline surges from my video game and I just take my metoperlol when it drives me crazy and it usually goes away. It have been going on for about a week. Hopefully it is a symptom that will cycle through and not come back for a while. Good news, it reminds me to take my evening dose of my metoperlol ;)

When I go lay down I feel like my blood is sloshing back and forth in my body--equalizing after blood pooling. I especially do not like the sense of waves of blood gushing past my temples and into my head with a force that seems like my face will blow off my skull.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have similar episodes and have been looking for the reason for a long time.  I’d agree with others that have said it’s most likely adrenaline surges.

This video about sleep problems in pots explains how repeated small stressors contribute to increasing stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to this sort of sleep disturbance.  It made a lot of sense to me and I think is most likely what’s at the root of my problem.
