What is going ON !!

Recommended Posts

My CNS has been holding its own as long as I don't do anything stupid. And I was feeling good about my progression of exercising too. I progressed in walking to almost and sometimes a little more than an hour walk. This is on sidewalks so it is uneven and at times there are hills to go up.  Then I suddenly get foot pain and it slowly gets worse...go to Ortho and they think its stress fracture and BOOT me!! Just happened to have bone density test scheduled and it comes back with both Osteoporpsis of my thigh and back bone with osteopenia noted in wrist and back! OKAYYYY! Now on fosamax even though I have always had plenty of calcium rich foods in my diet. See Ortho after 5 weeks, wants 2 more weeks in boot....ok...

And suddenly I come down with a Raging UTI !!!! For the first time in several decades...so antibiotics and force fluids, vitamin C (already doing) Then finally out of boot, no UTI and things are fine. Get into my compression capri, t-shirt and stockings for my visit with specialist(for CNS) and all goes well but I end up wearing this all day. Body not happy. I am post menapausal ladies so you understand changes that happen in "the nether yayya's"  I was miserable for 2 days, go to GYN and besides the obvious there is also a yeast thing going on...get med and off I go and feel better. The Clinic at Duke I go to for my CNS is always very crowded, cardiology, heart transplant, EP studies-you name it. So 3 days later I have scratchy throat and a tickle, goes into cough, congestion, headache, low grade fever of 99.2 (but I run 96.8-97.3) and the cough gets worse, congestion no matter what I try ( within my limitations)

So what is going ON!!!!! Do our immune systems tank after a while? This cold started friday and its worse ! I think I now have a sinus infection....so is this something I need to look into? Has this happened to others? I would appreciate some knowledge and advise, please

Debbie, I read somewhere that Calcium cannot be absorbed properly without Vitamin D. Have you ever had your Vitamin D levels checked? My mother has Osteoporosis and had severely low Vitamin D, now that hers is up, she is able to absorb the calcium supplements she takes. I had a low D level of 19 and now take 5000 Units every other day. Your A1C still looks good. If you're worried about Insulin Resistance, you can ask your doctor about taking Metformin. It is the first line in treating Insulin resistance. I am a full blown diabetic with a diagnosis A1C of 7.3. I unfortunately have to take Metformin 2000 Mgs a day and up to fifty units of fast acting Insulin with my meals (well any meal that has carbs in it) I can still maintain decent blood sugar if I only eat meat and cheese. But I hate meat and cheese, so I use Insulin. If you've already had gastric bypass, you should not have insulin resistance, but it can happen. Also, the bypass surgery is possibly making you deficient in Vitamins. They have linked Magnesium deficiency to diabetes as well. I would take Vitamin D, Calcium, and a good Magnesium supplement to help combat some of these issues. I hope this helps you some. J

Oh that’s a viscous cycle.  I am post-menopausal too and whenever I get an infection and take antibiotics on comes the yeast infection then fix that and on comes the BV.  At times, pre and post full blown POTS, this has gone on for months.  Very miserable.  I do think once the immune system starts tackling one issue it gets worn down and then other fun invaders take advantage.  I struggled with three colds in three months last winter.  I know my POTS is autoimmune and I have UCTD so my immune system is whackadoo.  I have no idea why I beat the last one, just taking it easy on exercise, never stopping though and resting a lot.  For vaginal stuff lots of probiotics and yogurt.   I am very worried about osteoporosis given how little time I can be upright, I did have my baseline bone density a year before full blown POTS , four years ago now, but GYN is concerned and I will likely have it done again next year.  My PT has me on a strength training regime I do at home and with her to try to maintain my bones.  I am so sorry that you are going through this.  It really sucks and that’s the nicest thing I can say about it all.  Just remember that you have fought hard to get where you were and will again.  Hugs.

@Debbie Rose - I am sorry about all of these terrible things happening to you. I do not know if I can be of any help but I have been in your shoes. I have had times when one  infection chased the other and my POTS was haywire. And I am also a sufferer of yeast-infections after antibiotics. When I went through a period similar to what you are going through now my PCP actually checked into my immune system ( I had all sorts of infections, including pink-eye ). This was at a time when my POTS was very unstable ( unless it was unstable because of the infections .. chicken or egg? ). I also have found that I m more prone to infections after surgery and EVERYBODY knows that stress can affect the immune system The best I can put together from all of that is that when our bodies - especially us dysautonomics - get out-of-whack then we are out-of-whack and our immune-system is no longer able to fight against all of the triggers because it is overwhelmed. This would be a simple way of explaining it. I know that until recently I was sick all of the time , the slightest sniffles could throw me off. Luckily my POTS has been quite stable recently and - although I have been sick with minor colds - I have been able to fight things off. So - is the POTS better because I have not been that sick or have I not been that sick because my POTS is better? ---- The conclusion is yet to come but I believe that it is when our bodies are stressed ( like in your case from repeated "blows") that we become weak and  symptomatic and a vicious cycle starts. In my case I usually treat the chaos with the usual remedies: rest, fluids, salt, IV fluids, mild exercise etc until the storm blows over and a type of order is reestablished. --- I wish only the best for you and that you will improve quickly!

Blizzard-I take a high dose of vitamin D-5,000 one day and 10,000 opposite days. I have been doing that for years and my range fluctuates between 38-58 on my tests-which is mid-range. I started Calcium with Mag+ and Zinc in January.

p8d-MY immune system hasn't been challenged lately because I rarely go out. However in March I was feeling better on some days and ran errands, which caused exposure to others plus dragged my immune system down-live and learn

Pistol- Sometimes I am so concentrated on the physical, I forget the emotional. I have been under tremendous stress lately trying to re-submit forms to continue my LTD from my employer while waiting for a date on my SSDI court appearance. That could have drained my immune system right there, thanks for the reminder

Always-thanks for the well wishes, they do help
