Any new pots “home remedy’s”?

Hi,

I am 16 years old. I am out of school going on missing 3 weeks in the 2 semester of my junior year. I am not able to continue my extra curricular activities. My health is very limiting. I have seen a cardio, who said just do high salt, hydrate, and the basic pots regimen. Which I have been doing. This magnitude of symptoms is quite new to me. If anyone has any other treatments that have worked for them please share it  would be greatly appreciated.

You may need more than home remedies to improve.  Fortunately there are many options available that could help.  Perhaps you can share this list with your physician or find a specialist willing to give you more help.

Here is a list of medications and other treatments that have been shown to improve POTS symptoms:

If you have no access to medication currently, something I found tremendously helpful for a while was licorice root capsules by swanson. They are a very cheap herbal supplement that works similarly to florinef which you can buy from amazon or health food stores.

Sorry you're dealing with this at such a young age.

A couple of months back my cardiologist took me off all supplements, told me I had to get everything from the food I eat and drink. It's been an adventure in eating but I am feeling much better. I choose a lot of fruits and veggies that are high in electrolytes as the basis of my meal, it's been fine so far and I feel like I have more clarity in between attacks.

Another great tip he gave me was to scrub my face with epsom salts. Just moisten your palms and touch them to the salts to take up enough to give yourself a scrub until the granules start to dissolve--like 20 seconds maybe--then rinse. The magnesium in the epsom salts is taken in through your skin, it's an almost instant energy boost that lasts a few hours (YMMV). As a bonus, it's a wonderful facial too. My doctor is awesome :-)

My cardio's always pushed standing and walking (as much as I can tolerate) and I can tell when I have been doing a lot of this vs. when I've been sedentary and sitting a lot.

Also, I've found that eating healthy, real food (ie: doesn't come in a box), cutting back on my sugar intake and getting processed foods out of my diet is helpful too.  I notice a substantial improvement when I'm abroad where food isn't loaded with all sorts of junk.

Definitely good compression tights. I was really skeptical about them at first but they worked for me.  Physical therapy would someone who actually understands POTS can help build tolerance is what I heard. I am trying it for myself just now. I only had one session and it didnt trigger me so I am counting it as a success for now.

Thank you guys, I’ve gone gluten free and vegan the past 2 weeks and have felt a whole lot better. Less headaches, less chest discomfort, less insomnia, and more energy. (Highly recommend it)The compression socks have helped along with a major salt increase. Still not in school but I’m up out of bed and pushing through the day a lot more.  Appreciate all your advice:))

If you are that sick and can't go to school I would definitely try to see another doctor who is more experienced in treating POTS.  An experienced doctor would surely have ideas of medications to try if you are missing that much school.  Personally, if I had stuck to just water and salt I may have never gotten better.

  • 2 weeks later...

Careful with doing a vegan diet, especially at your age.  It's very difficult to get enough protein and nutrients on a pure vegan diet for an adult; it's even more difficult for a developing body.

I was raised mostly vegetarian and by my late teens, I ultimately had to bring meat into my diet.   I saw multiple nutritionists, even a vegetarian dietician, and she was the one who ultimately pushed me to eating meat after everything else failed.  My health was deteriorating and my muscles weren't developing.   Bringing meat into my diet resolved it.
