Propranolol Dosage

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was wondering what dosage/frequency most POTS patients use for Propranolol? I have finally decided to retry beta blockers after several failed attempts. Before I try again I wanted to see what dosage and frequency works best for POTS patients.

Thanks!!

Hi nunntrio,

Here's an article from Vanderbilt you might find helpful: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2758650/

Your doctor knows you best, so you'll probably find they'll be more helpful regarding dosing. Titrating always has been a good option for me. You mentioned failed attempts w/ BB's, is this your first time trying propranolol?

Sarah, Thanks for the article. I am curious if Vanderbilt recommends they take 20mg in the morning or break it up into multiple does. My Dr. perscribed to take 10mg up to 3 times a day. However he said I can start slowly and work my way up as needed. He is not a POTS specialist, just an internist. There are no POTS Doc's in our area unfortunately. Right now I am taking 10 mg borken in 2 doses, I have had bad reactions to meds before so I want to start very slowly. I would like to work up to 20 mg but would love to take it all in the morning as I am not consistent with the afternoon dose. I am curious how many times a day others take it.

Originally I was on 10 mg twice a day, but that didn't work, so my doctor put me on the extended release, so now I take 80 mg ER once a day at night and it works great!

Hi there,

So it looks like just for this study they had all participants start the trial 2 hours after eating breakfast. As for a general protocol, I haven't been a patient there so I don't know, but I think it would vary on the patient. For example, I take mine 2 times a day now, however, I used to have to take it 4 to receive the most benefit.. I never had any side effects from this medicine at all so it didn't bother me to take it like that, but some people can only take a PM dose because the side effects are so bothersome. In my opinion going slow and starting on a low dose is the best way to ensure that you will have the least amount of side effects. Maybe you could do a past search also on propranolol/bb dosing?

I take 10mg morning and 10mg at night. I tried taking 10 mg at lunch but the dip in blood pressure was to much. Also it took a good 3 months to stabilize the side affects. The biggest being dizziness, tingly scalp and heaviness to breathe.

Thank you for the reply, It is encouraging to hear that your side effects went away. I hope they do for me as well. I am having dizziness and heaviness in breath as well (luckily not the tingly scalp). I have given up on BB in the past due to the side effect but am hoping to work through them this time. I have also had the problem of BB dropping my BP to much so I am hoping to find the right dose for me.

I'm not sure but I think I am getting side effects from propranolol

It slows my heart rate fine. But I'm getting needle like stabs on my scalp. Plus itchy pain. Pain in my eyes.

Very dizzy.

Anyone else?

Sounds familiar. How long you been on it? I think I experiences all of those for awhile but don't get them anymore. Took a few months...
