shelby Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Hey all of you. Hope the summer isn't killing anyone off yet, although somedays I feel it is. I just wanted to know how much salt intake everyones doctors have suggested. My dr just said add extra salt to things, but never gave me a number of mg. that would be good enough. Wonder if anyone here has had a dr. say what is a good range. Thanks in advance. Shelby Quote
LisaColumbus Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 My doc wants me on at least 5g salt daily....oops might be mgs, it comes out to about 2 tablespoons of salt a day Quote
Jenn202 Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 I have a major electolite problem so I need quite a bit of salt a day. I take up to 8 grams of salt tablets as well as some salty broth and salt in my food. Quote
yogini Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 The recommended total is 10-15g per day. http://www.dinet.org/what_helps.htmI found that this was a little too much for me, so it is probably different for each person. My guess is that I have around 6-8g total. I think it's about a week before the salt really starts to work. I found that it snuck up on me and gave me high BP when I tried to take too much at once, so I would recommend increasing it slowly until you get to the right level. (To clarify, these totals would include salt that you get from your regular food (which is 2-4g for most people) plus anything from supplements such as gatorade, salt tabs, broth, etc.) Quote
Ernie Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 My doctor prescribed 4 x 1 g pills per day.Ernie Quote
Roselover Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 I read a John Hopkins article suggesting 2 500mg sustained release tabs three times a day (3000mg). My Cardio wants me to take 2000mg a day. I bought sustained release salt tabs called "Thermotabs" from immunesupport.com. But I have also found that boullion/broth is just as good for me.(For any of you from UK... my husband and I watch British comedies and he asked me if I was going to have to wear red tights and a gold helmet. "Thermotabs" - "ThermoMan")~Roselover Quote
Gena Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Just a reminder to remember there is a difference between the actual amount/weight of salt (usually measured in grams) versus the amount of sodium that the salt actually contains (normally measured in milligrams). So if your're reading something on salt intake or getting advice from a doc, etc., just be sure to clarify this. It confused me at first, so I thought I'd share this. Gena Quote
shelby Posted June 12, 2005 Author Report Posted June 12, 2005 Thank you all for your imput. I am just trying to figure out a good plan to get through the summer. I always hate this time of year. Most people get a winter house in Arizona or somewhere south so they are in the warm areas. I want a house in Alaska during the summer. Hope you are all doing well. Shelby Quote
Sunfish Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 My "diet instructions" on my Vanderbilt discharge paperwork states 8-10 grams of salt daily...I don't take salt tabs at all but just add a lot to my food....I've never tried to calculate/measure it at all though...I just taste it:-)Good Luck!:-)melissa Quote
Kitsakatsa Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 I take 3% IV once or twice a day, high salt foods and salt pills when my stomach will tolerate. I've been told to shoot for 10,000 mg a day. I can go on a lower salt day, but pay the price the next. Quote
