Elevated Orthostatic Norepinephrine Levels

Recommended Posts

I had a standing catecholemine test this past week and when sitting everything was normal but standing my norepinephrine levels were elevated. I searched and couldn't find anything other than info on tumors which havent been found on any scans I've had. Thinking its just a reaction of what's going on rather than pointing to anything. Any input would be appreciated.

I have this too, and I do not have any tumors (usually the tumors they're looking for are pheochromocytoma, which I defnitely do not have). For me, it's my body's normal reaction to standing.

Elevated standing norepinephrine levels (noradrenaline) with normal sitting levels can be a very common sign of the Hyperadrenergic POTS subtype. Although, I've known some people who just have elevated norepinephrine with standing but don't have classic HyperPOTS, so I know it's all very individual.

In an adrenal tumor, it's more typical for your catecholamines (especially norepinephrine) to be elevated all the time, pretty much 24/7 while sitting, lying down, and standing (I say usually because I'm sure there can be weird exceptions). A lot of us go through testing for adrenal tumors (scans, blood and urine metanephrines) due to elevated catecholamines, but my one POTS doc said that it's pretty rare to find tumors in POTS patients.

That is a classic sign of hyperadrenergic POTS. Do you have facial flushing or hives? Do you have an exaggerated allergy response? If so, you might find an immunologist who specializes in Mast Cell disorders, as the two illnesses commonly travel together. Vanderbilt U has some pretty great research papers on the subject.

Thanks the info. I was negative for mast cell disorders and everything else that I been tested for. A few more tests to go though and I will be out of things to test for.

i have the same issue.. i believe my levels were over 1300 when i went to mayo.. and i believe even the high level is about 400..my doctor said the adrenal tumors can be so tiny that they cannot be detected and usually there are several of them.. they cannot be removed or anything done about it...but due to my symptoms even though they cannot see them they are almost 100% sure i do have them...i was put on klonopin due to the high levels and they are down around 750 now...so i dont feel as anxious..but still have good and bad days..but with the tumors they make my heart so touchy for lack of a better word just sitting if they are listening to my heart and i barely move it will run faster..if you ever have them rechecked make sure your doctors office knows how to check them properly..mine does not so i don't even bother..the two times i have had them done they have done them wrong so the level was not accurate so the 750 probably is not right..i would probably have to go back to mayo or as a outpatient hosp visit to get them done right..best wishes
