Could Diet Soda Be The Culprit?

I have thought and thought and thought about the cause of my illness and I cannot think of anything that changed in my life when I got sick over 2 years ago except that I had recently switched from regular soda to diet soda and Crystal Light. I keep hearing about the negative health affects of artificial sweeteners (particularly aspartame) and I have to wonder if this could be the cause for me. Any ideas?

I agree with yogini, I drank diet soda all my life but gave up diet soda after getting sick for a long time with no positive effect, in fact giving it up may have made me worse because I lost my caffeine intake. I am sure it is terrible for me in some way, but it is my source of caffeine and without it I am not as functional. I use it as a medication, it is a vasoconstrictor. I drink it over ice so it gets watered down which is more refreshing to me.

If you are worried you might be sensitive to the artificial sweetener in it, you could give it up as an experiment.

I don't know if it affects dysautonomia or not but artificial sweetners in my opinion is bad for anyone. The affect on me is they cause me to be more cranky anxious and agitated and sometimes I think lightheaded. when I was dieting I was eating those Hormel shelve packaged dinners the Hormel compleats and I was very cranky and wasn't in a good space and when I stopped I felt better with the crankiness and stuff. but I still have symptoms of dysautonomia.

I never drank diet soda. However, I am always used artificial sweetener in my one cup of coffee. It used to be equal. Oddly enough when I changed to splenda, my symptoms got much worse. Are any of them good for you? I doubt it. My own personal opinion: most illness is caused by all the artificial everything in our foods and everything else. I agree with Jan that maybe you should stop it as an experiment and see how you feel.

Never drank diet soda and avoided artificial sweeteners so that wasn't the cause of my POTS. (I always insisted on having real sugar with all the artificial chemicals in my sodas. :D) Like Yogini said, I had healthy habits in most every other part of my life and a soda a day is my source of caffeine. I always drink them over a lot of ice as well so they are pretty diluted.
