Does Getting Sick Make Pots Worse?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, quick question. Does getting a cold virus, or any other illness i suppose, make your POTS worse? I'm just asking b/c for the past two or so days I've been super weak and dizzy, and then my mom realized she has bronchitis, and I realized that I probably do too. I've never really experienced dizziness before with a bug , or blood pressure problems, so I am definitely curious.

Yes it does and it can cause your POTS to be worse. Keep yourself hydrated and rest. Whatever you do, keep your appointments for upcoming test. That is so important for you. Take care.

Ashley,

sorry to hear you got sick on top of POTS, but unfortunately - at least for me - yes, any minor illness makes my dysautonomia symptoms much worse :(

Hang in there and feel better!

Will definitely keep my appts for the tests. I'm hoping that by the 8th it'll have gone away, but if not i'm still going, b/c i doubt it would affect the results that dramatically by then! And yes, definitely staying hydrated!

Definitely it can make your symptoms worse. The nurse at my POTS specialist has said it can affect you for "weeks or months" after you have a virus.

Yes. Is definitely the case for me as well. Allow plenty of time for recovery. I was also told by my Neurologists nurse that it's not uncommon for there to be a several week or longer recovery time involved for pots symptoms to settle down post viral infection. Take care. I hope you feel better soon.

Dunno but it can make it unbearable.

First time at Cleveland Clinic i caught a cold THREE times in a month.

And I never catch colds, and i was using that hand stuff the whole time.

Yikes, it can take weeks to stop having issues from it?! That's just not right! Sounds a lot like how chronic fatigue syndrome functions. I imagine the two are more closely intertwined that it first seems.

My recovery time is typical when i get sick, but when my immune system is fighting something off, even if I don't feel sick, it absolutely drains me.

As I type this, my fiance has the flu, and I've spent a few days with her, even accidentally kissed out of habit.   No symptoms for me, but dizziness and fainting episodes are worse.  The biggest thing I notice is my sleep requirements skyrocket from the normal 4-5 hours I get to 10-16.  Knock on wood, I haven't been sick in 5 years, but there's a reason for that (currently doing research to see if this will work in a broader population), but there have been plenty of times where my immune system is using just about all of my energy to keep it that way.
