Pots & Alzheimer's

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't worry about dementia too much. I heard from a doctor one time, "if you have dementia, you will be the last to know".

I am on an iPad and I cannot write as much but, this is something to consider, since POTS can be autoimmune in origin.

I have AAG, which can cause cognitive impairment, known as "amnestic mild cognitive impairment" in addition to executive dysfunction. Roughly ten percent of people with AAG also have neuropsychiatric issues. However, executive dysfunction is far more prevalent.

A few months before I was diagnosed with AAG, I noticed that I was experiencing cognitive changes, which was scary. However, after treatment, I improved.

I have also heard that avoiding syncope and pre-syncope also helps with cognitive issues.

I will post more later (probably tomorrow). Do not be too scared about this.

It's ok to be forgetful and have brain fog with POTS/OH. Besides that, you're to young to have all those symptoms. I know you must be frustrated and scared because you never know what new symptom is going to show up. Keep researching symptoms and give the information to your doctor. Hopefully you have found a doctor you trust and have confidence in. A good doctor should be willing to rule out things that you research. Having a good nurse line also helps. I've used it twice today with my son. He's having a really bad POTS day. Hang in there. It's got to get better.

I'm 57 and I forget so much. So much stuff I can't remember. My neurologist and my allergist both assure me though that my ability to remember is very good. From my point of view, I must have had an outstanding memory when I was younger if they still consider my memory to be good now.

I think that possibly the more I worry about my memory failing and and also worrying about all my pots symptoms as well, the less I'm concentrating on what is happening in the now, hence I'm thinking, 'memory failure' when I'm perhaps I'm just not paying attention to the 'now.'

Achilles,

Earlier today I posted some articles on the cognitive impairment associated with POTS and CFS

http://forums.dinet.org/index.php?/topic/23584-pots-as-a-clinically-important-subgroup-of-cfs-further-evidence-for-central-nervous-system/

Here is one of them that you may find relevant

Take it easy, like diabeticgonewild's dr said, if you were to have Alzheimer's or something similar, you'd probably be the last to know...unfortunately.

About 8 months ago my mother was diagnosed with mid stage dementia with Lewy bodies, she had a memory assessment, I was present and I can assure you I could not answer half the questions my mother did with ease! I have found that I have from very young had issues with memory and processing information, but I am very much worse on days my other ANS dysfunction symptoms are bad.

Achilles,

here are some articles you might want to read if you can get your hands on their full versions:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8924753

Orthostatic hypotension in organic dementia: relationship between blood pressure, cortical blood flow and symptoms.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10476310

Orthostatic hypotension in Alzheimer's disease: result or cause of brain dysfunction?

First of all, please note the ages of the patients: (80+). Then, it looks to me though as if the Alzheimer's is responsible for the orthostatic hypotension (not the same as POTS) and not the other way around.

Best,

Alex
