Hope
I keep rescheduling my appointment to get my teeth out. The first time when they were going to knock me out, I panicked, my fingers were turning purple and I couldn't get myself to lay down on the chair. The second time I had a different issue not POTS related, today I was suppose to go in first thing but my heart rate is 148 and all I have done is take a shower. If I go in and get the epi, it's going to go up even further. So I cancelled once again. When I take things like Xanax, or Ativan it drops my blood pressure too low and I can't function. Same with Benadryl. I HAVE to get these things out!
Mydoggielovesme2
Hi Hope, there was a thread on this a month or so ago. There was some very good advice, and research articles posted. I would try to find this, it might help. Best of luck.
Hope
Thanks! I'm not on here regularly, I miss stuff. I check it out.
Kellysavedbygrace
I'd recommend discussing w your autonomic doc. Might consider trying high dose antihistamines prior to the procedure to combat natural histamine release that occurs in dental surgery. Might help to minimize your reaction. This was recommended by my neurologist before I even knew I had mast cell issues.
Hope
Thank you! I didn't even know that histamines were released during dental surgery. That's very interesting!
SpinnyC
Everyone of us is different so I think the best thing to do is discuss the plan with your doctors and dentist. Maybe if you feel like everyone is prepared you will feel more comfortable.I had my wisdom teeth out with Pots. At first I wanted to be knocked out but the dentist said no- not with my dizziness and other symptoms. So we planned to do it with novocain and laughing gas. But laughing gas made me feel way too much like fainting, so they stopped it and went to plan c. Which was only novocain and not doing them all at once- only taking out 1 or 2 at a time whatever I could handle. The procedure itself wasn't too bad... not fun my any means but quicker than I expected and I had no pain during and very little pain after. Dealing with the pots symptoms, the histamine release, and my jaw being slightly dislocated (because my joints are so loose) afterwards were worse than any pain. As soon as I stood up after the procedure I almost passed out and then came close to vomiting. Same thing happened the second time I went in. But because they knew my history they were ready for something weird both times. They laid me back down, gave me oxygen, took my vitals ect. The days of recovery weren't bad because of pain it was the Pots symptoms. I just took it easy, tried keep myself from feeling too much pain by using the painkillers they gave me, and staying on top of the icing schedule (that way the pain wouldn't add to the Pots symptoms), monitored my vitals, and dealt with the dizziness and nausea as best I could.Good Luck! bkweavers
My daughter has POTS and had her wisdom teeth out about a month ago. Her doctor was very good about contacting her POTS specialist as well as reassuring us that they would monitor her during and after the procedure. We also talked to the POTS doctor to see if there was anything that we needed to do.The procedure took only 40 minutes and she hardly had any symptoms. Usually, she would have gotten very dizzy but that didn't happen this time so we were very happy about that. The pain and soreness took awhile to dissipate and she was very fatigued for 5 days.Overall, everything that I was worried about never happened and it went way better than I had expected.I wouldn't put it off any longer or you could end up with other complications. Good luck and try not to worry and just prepare as much as you can ahead of time!Brenda
Hope
Ok, I thought I would up date here. I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled 2 days ago finally! My husband went with me instead of anybody else because I feel the most secure with him. My cardiologist told me to only get one out at a time, so I got one with no "epi". It took 3 rounds of shots to finally get it numbed enough to pull, but it was very quick. The doctor was great. I am having more POTS symptoms since then, but not too bad. I'm back to using my cane, but hopefully not for long. The pain was not even bad enough to take my prescription. I have just taken extra strength Tylenol and luckily that has not bothered my breathing as it sometimes can. After I recover from this little worsening of my POTS-episode, I will schedule the other one need pulled.
Kellysavedbygrace
That's great news. Let us know how you continue to progress and what happens when you get the other(s) out. I know this issue isone that others have been concerned about too so your story is helpful to share.
