boymommy3
I am on Metoprolol Xl. I was taking 25mg. in the am and 25mg. in pm but because I seem to have more problems at night a new cardiologist I saw last week told me to take both at night. So, I am taking 50 mg./day....I see that a lot of people on here are so sensitive to medicines and can only take small doses. If I am taking that much why am I still waking up at night with a racing heart? It takes very little for my hr to get up doing other things and I have palpitations. Does that make sense that this should still be happening?
bebe127
I am on Metoprolol as well only not on XI. I take 25 mg. 3x/daily, morning, afternoon and evening before bed (75mg per/day). I still have the same issues as you do. I tend to have hypertension and at my last visit, the dr. suggested I up the mg. to 100mg per/day. He also said this could lower my bp enough to pass out however. My husband and I discussed it in the office (with dr. present) and decided that I didn't want to take the chance of passing out, so opted out of increasing the meds. My bp still fluctuates often and I still have tachy although not as much I suppose and I wake up sweaty most nights. I don't know why this still happens.Hopefully, will be seeing a new EP soon and might get some answers.Sorry I couldn't be of more help, other than to let you know I go through the same thing.Hope you get some answers soon and begin to feel better. Joann
Boymommy,Everyone is different. A lot of people are super sensitive to medications, but not everyone. I also am taking metoprolol. I take 1/2 tablet in am. and 1/2 in pm.I also take another blood pressure medication. I think it is a lot of hit or miss on the medications. Some work, some don't, some make it worse and maybe some you need more of.My medications are working somewhat. I am still having scary surges and will probably have to try something else. In fact one doctor wants me to try clonodine instead. I have to get the courage to try and change. It may work better, but my fear is it may work worse. I know what worse feels like and I don't want that. I have had really bad things happen when I have been late with my current meds, so the thought of going off to try something else scares the be jes, out of me!So, maybe more will work for you. Or maybe another medication will be added. I wish they had formula that they knew worked but it seems like we have to go through a lot to find what works for us. Guest Alex
It seems that some of us are more sensitive to meds than others - beta blockers included.I was unable to tolerate metoprolol at all, and I've been having problems with beta-blockers in general. To answer your question about episodes of tachycardia - I was on 25 mg metoprolol and still got tachy episodes - ONLY at night, same thing happened when I switched to bisoprolol.I had nasty tachy episodes at night even when I was taking a combo of propranolol + florinef + mestinon + klonopin , so I got to the conclusion that my body has a mind of its own and feeding it countless drugs that should keep certain symptoms at bay may not be the best option. A nurse I met in the ER about a year ago told me that it,s possible for the tachy episodes to be actually a sort of rebound effect - the beta blocker lowers one's body pressure to levels that the body does not feel comfortable at, so it reacts by increasing the reart rate, ergo the tachy at night. Maybe she was just trying to comfort me?!You might want to ask your dr for alternative treatments, or for an opinion as to why this happens. corina
Though sharing the same symptoms we are all so different. I'm not medication sensitive and had to build up metropolol as well due to the body getting used to it. I ended taking 300mg (LA) daily. At that dose my heart finally stopt racing on standing. Strangely it had no effect on bp at all (good thing of course!) though it made me way to tired. My cardio and I decided to go back to 200mg (LA) and accept some racing. I've been on it for about 10 years (slowly weaned off when on octreotide)
