Can anyone tell me if taking Lanzoprazole is the same as Zantac for being an H2 blocker.

I am trying the H1 H2 treatment this week for MCAD.

I take 15mg of Lanzoprazole I would say probably every 2/3 days. If a PPI is ok do i have to make sure i take 15mg each day? Same question with Zantac, do people take this once a day? Is it better to take in morning or evening have people found?

Diamond,

PPIs will decrease stomach acid production, but they do not block histamine. Recommended OTC H2s for MCAD treatment include zantac (randitidine) and pepcid (famitodine), as well as several prescription H2s. Mast cell experts recommend taking a H1 and H2 simultaneuosly as they work better blocking a mast cell reaction in combo. Most people take their MCAD meds anywhere from two to four times a day for scheduled meds and breakthrough meds when needed. Some people with excessive stomach acid wil take a PPI in addition to their histamine blockers.

Have you checked out a low histamine diet? I know that I am much better able to limit my reactions when I limit my triggers, especially food triggers and chemicals/food dyes.

Thank you for making that clear Lyn

I have not looked into the diet for low Histamine, I will be sure to take a look at it.

Thanks

Agreed. PPIs won't have same histamine blocking benefit. Though they're great for other causes of GERD/GI upset and some ppl with mast cell issues/IA seem to need H2 blockers and PPIs to control the crazy mast cell production. I'm just on Zantac at the moment.

Nina,

There is a mast cell disorders forum online that has great dietary information. Most mast cell patients follow the histamine diet on the chronic urticaria website, which is also listed on the mast cell disorder forum. You can find both sites with online search.
