ken870 Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 I have had two doctors appointments the last two months where they tell me my blood sugar is real high so I was wondering if pots patients have diabetes. Quote
Rachel Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 Diabetes can cause dysautonomia. You will find it listed on the Causes page of DINET: http://www.dinet.org...causes_pots.htm You will also find a lot of articles if you google "dysautonomia and diabetes."I hope you can find out why you are having these high blood sugars.Rachel Quote
Ashelton80 Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 When I was in the ER a few weeks back with a really bad POTS flare my blood work showed low potassium and high sugar at 206. I hadn't eaten anything that day. I think it's normal the rest of the time though. Quote
ken870 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Report Posted March 21, 2012 My blood sugar was fine until I was diagnosed with pots now it goes up and down but now it is staying high all the time. Quote
issie Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 I've had blood sugar type issues for most of my life. I've found the GTF Chromium keeps me pretty balanced. One of my doctors told me to take it and when I was really bad, I'd take it 2X a day and now only once and stay good. I was real bad hypoglycemic as a child and now as an adult my sugar tends to swing both ways - but, as long as I take that - stays pretty good.Issie Quote
MomtoGiuliana Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 When my POTS symptoms were more severe I had blood glucose measured a couple of times and it was pretty high (don't remember #s). My specialist told me that the body mobilizes glucose in the fight-or-flight reaction (that seems to sometimes be a constant state with severe POTS) and he felt that could have caused it. Since that time period when I was quite sick w POTS I have never had high fasting blood glucose again and my gp tests me regularly b/c I have two sisters with type II diabetes. Quote
L4UR3N Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 This is just a personal viewpoint, but I believe that pre-diabetes may play some role in POTS.You mentioned that your blood sugars were always fine before POTS, but I wonder what "fine" actually means. Doctors often dont get too excited unless its high, so a lot of people have pre-diabetes for years without ever even knowing it.On the other hand, MomtoGiuliana makes a very good point about the SNS and glucose. It also explains the hypoglycemic crashes that some of us experience. ....but then again...pre-diabetes can do the same thing. Kind of the chicken or the egg scenario . Quote
