Dr.'s In Virginia? (Or Somewhere Not Too Far?)

Hello!

My husband and I moved to Charlottesville, VA about a year and a half ago. I've been searching for a dr. who understands POTS now this entire time. (I've been to quite a few cardiologists who weren't helpful at all) After going through a miscarriage this year that through all of my POTS symptoms for a loop (and now a pregnancy), I'm starting to feel desperate for a dr. Does anyone have any suggestions of dr's in the area. If a dr. is good enough, I'm willing to drive a few hours but the trip to see Dr. Grubb right now is just too much for me physically.

Thanks for any advice!

Lisa

Depending on how old you are I suggest Dr. Abdullah in Reston, VA. He is a childrens cardiologist but he treats patients in to their mid twenties. He is awesome!!! I live 45 min. away from Charlottesville :) and I tried many doctors until I found him. I really hope you can find a good one, I know how disheartening it can be when every doctor you go to doesn't understand what you have or they think it's anxiety.

Thanks!! Unfortunately I'm 32 so I don't fall into his typical patient. Do you think it would be worth contacting his office to try to get in anyways? Thanks again!

YES! YES! YES! I would definitely give it a try. I wish he would see everyone on this website who could not find a good POTS doctor. He knows about all the weird little symptoms everyone mentions. When he came in he was like oh yes your pupils are very dialated and you have bags under your eyes. Then he felt my hand and he was like very cold, but sweaty oh yes you have POTS. I wanted to ask him where he has been the past three years when I tell so many doctors about this weird stuff and all my other symptoms and they just stare blankly at me and tell me I'm anxious.

Absolutly! Yes it is my first. He's the third pots specialist for me. The first one was horrible, the second I had to fly 2000 miles to see but he was amazing, so I'm hoping third time is a charm and this one can be my local treating doc. I will report everything on Friday :)

Thanks Julie!!

I've been a patient of Dr Grubb for about 8 years (he's great too, just really far away now)! We moved to VA last year and I've felt like I've been on my own with symptoms and treatments. Looking forward to hearing how this goes for you!

There is also a new Neurologist in Norfolk, VA who is from the Cleveland Clinic that many POTSies online love, his name is Dr. Chemali. I'm thrilled he is here and am in the process of getting an appointment.

Hope it goes well with Dr. A - he's supposed to be great!

Thank you so much for posting this question way back in 2012, and for the reply about Dr. Abdallah!!! One would think that after 10 years more people would be aware of dysautonomia and it would be easier to find someone to explore and treat it... but alas, here we are (although I hope that everyone in this discussion has found help and is enjoying good health!) For the last decade+ I've been struggling to find help with my chronic fatigue symptoms beyond "take an antidepressant and exercise." Unfortunately now that Long Covid exists, there's more awareness around the symptoms and diagnoses related to post-viral illness.

I have an appointment with Drs. Abdallah (they're a husband/wife team, which is so cool) in July and am so hopeful. It's a little daunting because the office visits will be long days with a lot of testing and extremely exhausting... but also extremely worth it, if for no other reason than to be taken seriously!

EDIT: Unfortunately my appointment, which was supposed to be today, was cancelled last week for an unknown reason. The reason I was given was: "the doctors won't be in the office that day," and apparently the doctors cancelled an entire 2 weeks of patients. I was extremely disappointed because I'd been waiting for a month and was rescheduled for September... Despite the good reviews for Dr. Abdallah, I'm having trouble with trust. The reason for the cancellation is not my business but I'd have appreciated something less aloof, as well as some empathy. From my perspective it's a really big deal to have to wait for another two months. In the meantime I'm searching for a different doctor, but if I do go with someone else I've lost a whole month of waiting (as I'm sure everyone else has long wait times)! It's a bummer. :(
