I'm heading to Houston today to go to a vestibular clinic that has actually researched vestibular issues for astronauts! I'm hoping they'll be able to help my pre-POTS, 12 year history of daily, slight vestibular issues. It has kept me from driving(self-imposed) for 10 years! I have always likened it to being drunk and getting into the car to drive--you just can't quite keep your eyes focused on the road. Now, I say that, but don't get the impression that I have been drunk and driving!! Just remembering those old college days of having a good time, and then just walking was interesting! It would be something if they could find the cause and fix it. I can't imagine how great it would be to drive again. Of course, if they can't fix it, I've learned to live without driving. One of those times where they ask you not to eat for 3 hours before because you may hurl! Oh well, with my gastroparesis, it will be waiting to hurl even after three hours of no eating. I'm not looking forward to the "unpleasant" effects from balance testing, but will be glad to have this matter looked into further.Issie, your description is exactly what I go through. Also, if they make a connection between the vestibular system and the ANS, I'd love to hear their take on it. Hope they can pinpoint your problem and help you. sue1234 Posted March 21, 2011 Author Report Share Posted March 21, 2011 I did mention to the doctor that I was there today because I ran into a medical article a couple of months ago that talked about the connection between the vestibular system and orthostatic intolerance. He said that the vestibular system can activate the autonomic nervous system. So, I did strongly let him know that I have POTS, but am there to have my vestibular system checked out. I guess I couldn't stress enough that POTS is a BIG health for me. That way he can approach my inner ear with the ANS in mind. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There is definitely a connection between vestibular & ANS - why else would so many of us have visual & vertigo issues! I'm looking fwd to hearing about you experience... The doctor I am seeing is a neurotologist(?), which is an even better specialist than just plain ENT. They are an ENT who has additional education incorporating neurology into the picture.
