skiberthoud
Hello fellow migraine sufferers. Here is my question: Have any of you tried any of the natural/herbal/homeopathic products for migraine relief and have they helped? It's looking like I'm headed back on meds for my migraines, but I'm not thrilled with the idea (though am thrilled about not having to try to survive my daily migraines) and am looking for alternatives. Thoughts and experiences are appreciated. Thanks!
Sarah4444
I developed really debilitating migraines (like there's another kind) at 36 and had many a month for years, until about May-June 2010. I have no idea why they stopped, and am terrified they'll start again. The only thing I can associated with them stopping is discontinuing the use of long-acting narcotics for pain. My neurologist tells me this is very unusual, but what else is new.
Sallysblooms
I had them for years. Horrible. Doctors were no help until I found a good doctor that knew about hormone balancing. They are gone now. I take compounded gel hormones.
Rachel
I take 400mg of magnesium daily. My doctor recommended this when I was pregnant and didn't want to take a migraine medication if I could avoid it. The magnesium helps some, though I do have to take a small dose of a prescription med now in addition to the magnesium.I have also tried MigreLief. It has magnesium, feverfew, and riboflavin. I didn't find it any more helpful than just magnesium, but I have read that it is beneficial for some who suffer from migraines.Rachel
skiberthoud
Thanks, ladies, for your replies. I just saw a new neurologist who told me the first thing I have to do is get off all OTC pain relievers. (I'll wait until after I'm over the flu!) Rachel - I've heard about how magnesium can be helpful. I also came across MigreLief online and ordered it. I read that it can take 4-8 weeks to notice the benefits. We shall see. I'm going to try the Hylands Migraine Relief in the meantime, I think. Thanks for sharing your experience.Sallyblooms - so for you it was hormones causing your migraines. Did you experience them all the time, or did they follow a pattern with your hormones?
Noreen
I was told to take riboflavin and CoQ10 by the migraine specialist in addition to the magnesium.
firewatcher
I've had very good success with Japanese, NON-INSERTION, acupuncture treatments. My acupuncturist will not insert needles into me due to sympathetic overdrive. I don't know how common the technique is, but it has helped me come down to 1/3 of the medication that I had been on. sugartwin
Taking 400mg of CoQ10 a day has almost completely eliminated my migraines (maybe down to one every two months now.) I used to have them nearly every week; I felt like I was always coming out of one or going into one.
Sallysblooms
Tablet, they followed a pattern for years, then they were almost constant once perimenapause hit. That happened young. Hormones going up and down really can be horrid.
sandymbme
I have had some success using feverfew as preventative. There used to be a wonderful tea, called migrawonder, that gave me awesome results. So naturally, they stopped making it! Sandy
Chaos
I had several years of very few headaches when I was taking feverfew. But then it stopped working or else something else changed because the headaches got worse again. I definitely notice the headaches are worse when my hormones are off. I'm on an estrogen patch and OTC progesterone. That helps a lot, but even still I've been having a lot more headaches the last 18 months or so. Saw a new neuro two weeks ago who told me the same thing about OTC pain meds. Said Alleve was the only OTC thing I could take as all the others like ibuprofen, tylenol etc are too short acting and people with migraines are too sensitive to the rebound effects from those meds. Unfortunately Alleve kills my stomach and doesn't help my headaches so need to call him and find out what other options I have. Good luck finding alternatives! jimells
I recall trying some homeopathic something or other a few years ago. It was a waste of money. Recently I heard a report that homeopathic only works on people who believe in it. That leaves me out.Is there any truth to the rebound headache stuff? A few years ago a 'specialist' wrote in her report that I had rebound headaches. And the evidence? I had denied having rebound headaches, so that proved that I had them. Nice logic. Her recommendation was that I should take nothing for the migraines. Real useful.
Sarah4444
Joe, I don't know anything about the medical reseach on rebound headaches, but my neurologist thought that I might be having some trouble with this. I had been taking long-acting narcotics for back pain so I could try to work, and I developed awful, frequent migraines. I didn't believe her, but when I stopped taking the narcotics, the migraines definitely improved (I had been taking Axert for them, which worked ok but I was really wearing down. Now I'm just stuck with pain and all the rest of this stuff, assuming the migraines don't start escalating again... summer
My neurologist recommended Riboflavin to me for prevention of migraines.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15257686
Will_I_am
Hi to all, I also suffer from Migraines. I too have been to Neurologists and was told to get off the caffeine and otc pain meds which I did. I was prescribed Topamax, and some other prescribed meds that I don't recall now. None of their methods worked so I went back to caffeine( Dr Pepper),otc pain meds, heating pads, cold packs, long hot showers and just enduring it with lights out and trying to sleep it off....matter fact yesterday was a killer migraine day. Best of luck to all and hope you find a solution.
handmadebyemy
I'm a fellow migraine sufferer since age 14. I did this diet for 1 1/2 years and it cut back on my migraines dramatically. I was having them up to 5x a week and on the diet I only got 1-2 per month. Here's the book that explains the completely sugar fee diet: http://www.amazon.com/Victory-over-Migraine-Breakthrough-Completely/dp/0805009272/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1295453782&sr=8-1I've tried acupuncture, homeopathy, and all sorts of natural remedies and this diet is what helped the most. Its tough to stick to though.
